Exclamation Intermittent Air bag light on 05 limited. Need help!

Hey guys, not new to Jeep but new to the forum.

Recently picked up a 05 Grand Cherokee limited with the 5.7 HEMI. 63,000 miles.

The problem I am having is the Jeeps air bag light will randomly come on in the dash and also sound off a chime when it happens. (the red symbol on the cluster...not the passenger air bag light).

Some times it will pop on right after you start the Jeep and pop right off, some times it stays on for a few seconds and then shuts back off, some times it will stay on for a few minutes before it shuts off. Sometimes it will come on and shut of 2,3,4 or more times in a 20 miles trip. Sometimes it won't even come on at all!.

I have did alot of reading on forums and haven't been able to figure it out and was hoping someone here could help me pin point the issue.

I have checked all the wiring and connectors underneath the seats (read somewhere to check those areas). I have also seen that a bad clock spring can cause air bag light issues....the problem is I don't have any other issues that might accompany a bad clock spring ( all my steering wheel electrical components are in proper working order...all light and signal and wiper switches work, horn works, cruise works, radio works...etc...etc...).

I cant reproduce the conditions that cause the light to come on....I have tried cranking my wheel from lock to lock,I have tried wiggeling wires under the seats, I have tried bouncing up and down in the seats...etc...etc... It appears to be a totally random thing.

no signs of any previous damage to the Jeep either.

I did hook a scan tool up to the Jeep and found no current codes in the system, I did however when looking through the air bag module section of the scan tool find a stored code of B212C which showed as " Ignition Run/Start Input Circuit open". Again though, this was a stored code and not a active code. So as to if this is even related to the issue or not I don't know. may have been there from another issue long ago for all I know.

I did erase the code from the system though. But the air bag light issue is still present.

I hate running into little gremlins like this that give you a run for your money.

hoping there is someone else here that has had the same problem or is familiar with the issue that can point me in the right direction. It would be greatly appreciated!.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Intermittent Air bag light on 05 limited. Need help!

First post here but I recently had a similar issue with my 05 4.7l limited.

Have you replaced any fuses under the hood lately? I blew a fuse and grabbed one out of the "extra" slot. Afterwards my airbag light came on and stayed on. I replaced the fuse in the extra slot and my airbag light went away for good. Hope this helps!

Re: Intermittent Air bag light on 05 limited. Need help!

nope,no blown fuses and both of the 10 amp red spare fuses are in place.

I had also read something about someone else having mentioned the spare fuses causing air bag light issues.

my issue is intermittent though...not a constant light.

I did however Just a couple hours ago inspect both of those fuses and re installed them and firmly seated them into position just in case.

Being that its an intermittent problem, all I can do is wait and see if that fixes the issue.

In the meantime if anyone else has any info to add. Please feel free to do so. Thanks

I also thought the fact that it was intermittent was a bit strange. It almost sounds like a grounding problem. I'm new to Jeep so I wouldn't even know where to tell you to look.

Re: Intermittent Air bag light on 05 limited. Need help!

I am pretty well mechanically inclined ...So I normally do all my own vehicle repairs. But its stupid little issues like this that will throw you for a loop. More so on newer vehicles with miles of electrical wiring in them lol.

I would think that if it was ground related that other components in the Jeep would malfunction aswell. But then again....if I knew for sure....I wouldn't be here looking for help haha.

It will probably be something small when I finally do get it sorted out and I will kick myself when I have that " AAA HAAA " moment lol.

Re: Intermittent Air bag light on 05 limited. Need help!

Mine just started doing this. Both the light on the dash and the passenger light will turn on at the same time.

If I press very very lightly on the passenger seat or sit something on it, both lights will turn off and stay off.

Seems as if the passenger seat needs to be calibrated.

Re: Intermittent Air bag light on 05 limited. Need help!

Did you recheck the airbag control module for any fault stored after the reset and after the fault returned? The fault obviously will be a historic fault and not a current fault, otherwise the airbag light would stay on. It is intermittent and most probably a bad connection or an internally broken wire, which are always nice to find. But if the airbag light was on due to a failure, a fault code must be stored.

So the air bag light in the dash is a fault light? Kinda like a CEL?

Can I read the air bag light like a CEL? I have a reader.

Re: Intermittent Air bag light on 05 limited. Need help!

Yes, it is more or less the same as the CEL, only the fault is stored in the ACM (airbag control module) and many scanners will only read the PCM.

Ok. Thank you. I doubt my scanner will be able to read it.

Would I get cut a break by the dealer if I go in for an oil change and ask them to scan it while their at it?

I doubt they will. If they pull the scanner from the bench, they charge you for it.
You donīt have autozone or alike in the nabourhood, they do it for free.

I have a scanner but I'm sure it only reads the CEL.

So you're telling me that AutoZone or Advance should be able to read the Air Bag?
