Is the rear diff known for whining??

My rear diff just started whining. I'm going to change the fluid, but I know that will not cure the problem. Is there any thing I should look at specifically, like a known problem/ issue when I have the cover off? Thanks

Re: Is the rear diff known for whining??

When you pop the cover, I ALWAYS drop the cover down below the diff in a hand and catch some of the fluid flowing out of the housing. I then inspect the fluid with a flashlight for metal sparkles... if you see metal flake in the fluid its time for some new bearings.

Re: Is the rear diff known for whining??

Yep, common fault. Poorly assembled and shimmed from the factory.

Solution is to remove the centre and have it the gears lapped and the bearings/backlash shimmed.

Is this a major problem? I'm just curious as to what long tem damage the whine can cause?

It can whine forever, when it starts to growl or howl I would make it a priority to repair.

Re: Is the rear diff known for whining??

Mine was first rebuilt at $900 and three days later it broke. So I had to pay another $1,100. This was from an Aamco Shop.

Re: Is the rear diff known for whining??

How much do you shim the bearings? How can I tell what axle I have?

Re: Is the rear diff known for whining??

Jeep stopped using Dana axles in the 05 and up WK, and the WK axle assemblies are typical Chrysler poor quality. It is not an easy task, the shims are very thick and a selection of arouind 90 different thicknesses would need to be in stock by a shop to do it correctly, as each rebuild is different. JAsper reman's them the right way, whereas most rebuilds are not shimmed to OEM tolerance.
