Re: jeep cranks sometimes and then finally starts

Battery is a good start if its original, as stated its REALLY picky and can do weird things if the original is getting tired.

There is also this starcase:

Quote:
Vehicle Issuelong crank time, hard start, NO DTC's present;Long Crank time, Hard to Start, usually after sitting on cold soak but may not always happen after long soak. Tech. can duplicate.System or ComponentHard Start, Long Crank TimeRecommendationA FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE ,VOLUME and BLEED DOWN TEST, MUST be performed. In some cases the fuel pump bushing may have cracked resulting in a piece floating out of place and lodging in the fuel return check valve, thus holding it open. This can result in a longer than normal time to pressure the rail, and resulting in longer crank times. A bleed down test will determine that this is the concern. If the tests show any deficiencies of the fuel system, the pump module will require replacement.
A long crank can be a bleed down concern with your fuel pressure as already suggested... Ultimately I am going to be honest there is some conflicting information reading this that make deturmining the actual symptoms difficult.

Also, typically you will notice your crankshaft position sensor failing in other ways, bucking, or a complete no start/dieout condition.

Re: jeep cranks sometimes and then finally starts

Have you tried holding the key in the position just before it starts to crank for 3-5 seconds, and then clicking to start? The CPS allows a few seconds of running the fuel pump and this can allow any loss of fuel pressure to build back up again. See if it is quicker starting that way.
