Leaks when it rains

I have a 2005 GC and as of late every time it rains it leaks inside from the front driver and passenger sides. On the driver side the water is coming in from that handle bar thing with that little clip that can be open. If it's raining I can see water dripping from it and if I open the clip it's a waterfall. I check the weather strips and they don't look that bad so I don't know where it could be leaking from.. it's so bad that the water is dripping from the middle of the roof where the sunroof controls are located at. I don't think it's the sunroof because I see no water leaking from there. As for as the passenger side goes my carpet is always wet. I can see water leaking from the side of the glove compartment. The weather stripping on the passenger side is bad but I don't see water leaking from the top just the bottom.

I know it's hard to diagnose on a forum but is this something I should take to the dealer to have fixed.

Re: Leaks when it rains

Recently experienced this in my '08 WK. Did some searches on this forum, concluded likely clogged front sunroof drain tubes (also concluded I didn't have time to mess with them myself). Took it to a dealer who confirmed and fixed, fine since. You can check yourself- open sunroof, sit on your center console, look for the tops of the front drain tubes. See if it looks like water is backed up there (it was very obvious in mine). If dry, you can spray some water in that area to see if it backs up. Hope this helps.

Re: Leaks when it rains

I have a similar issue! Mine leaks on the driver side (A-Pillar) where the grab bar is, and the water comes out where the 'screw cover' is. What makes mine tough to diagnose is it does not leak every time it rains or gets wet, and I do NOT have a sunroof!!

You should check your seals around the window then.

I think, without a moonroof, the most common source of a leaky A-Pillar is from the windshield. I would check the seal around the windscreen to see if that is how the water is getting in.

Re: Leaks when it rains

I had my sunroof lose calibration causing a leak. It wouldn't fully close flush, leaving about a 1/8" gap. I went through a automatic carwash and it completely soaked the interior. Had a 99 grand cherokee do the same thing but it was because of the windshield not being sealed correctly.

Check under your front carpet area for water. I had water under there as well. If it doesn't dry out, it could cause serious rust issues in your floor pan later on. Use a vacuum to suck the water out of the carpet and underneath it, then use a heater to dry it out. to check your sunroof, open it fully and look at the drain holes on the top side (should be towards the front). If you don't see anything blocking them (dirt etc). Try a small cup of water and poor it into the drain slots on each side. If it comes out the bottom of the jeep, it's not the drain holes that are clogged. It's something else causing the issue.

As far as going to the dealer, IMO I wouldn't. They would charge you an arm or leg to fix the windshield. I would take it to a windshield/window replacement company and see what they say first. They might be able to find the source of the leak and seal it back up for you for half the cost. That's what I had to do with my 99.

Re: Leaks when it rains

hello
herunder the link to another thread
Water leaking into front driver side pillar...Any ideas? Help.

as you don't have sunroof , check the top corners of the windshield , in the area where you have the rubber strip and plastic part.

remove the dust and whatever you find and use some industrial invisible silicone .It worked for me no more leak
I've heard this a lot of time , I think there was a TSB or someting regarding "top corner are badly sealed ", but I don't find information anymore
Other solution if you know someone is to remove windshield and seal it again, but it cost a bit

Re: Leaks when it rains

Is it possible to fix the sunroof drains without going to the dealer? Eg, vaccuum cleaner or small poker to clear the clog.

Re: Leaks when it rains

Could very well be your windshield also. Mine was leaking for awhile, had to eventually have my windshield replaced because it was cracked, no water problems since. It was leaking before the windshield was damaged, kinda just ignored it, and was pleasantly surprised it stopped after the new glass. Just an idea if it's not clogged drains.

Also, if your in NY (or another state that has glass coverage) and have full glass coverage on your policy, you dont pay to replace the glass. But usually it has to be damaged. But if you do have glass coverage, doesnt hurt to call your insurance company and tell them you think it's leaking, they may pay to replace the seal, moulding around it if it is damaged.

I washed the car today and did as u said and there was a puddle inside all the way across. It would explain why water leaks through the a pillars and the center console at top that controls the sunroof. I know it was from washing the car because I checked it before I washed and there was no water inside. Is there a fix for this other than taking it to the dealership?

Re: Leaks when it rains

Update:

I used a wire hanger, straw and compress air to clean both drain holes for my sunroof. I poured a couple bottle of water from the back of the sunroof while open and it went into the drain and leaked out from the bottom of the car instantly. The passenger side I think there is a little more problem because after pouring a couple bottle of water inside the car I got a little drip coming from the handle bar thing. Hopefully it's just because I poured too much water there too fast.
