New Rear end - $1900?

2010 GC with 130K miles - just took it in for service at the dealer (I know, why am I taking it to the dealer, but for me its out of convenience) for oil change and some of the 120K mile recommended service that I didn't have done previously. Was having a droning sound that I thought was due to my tire treads getting low. Dealer calls and said they opened up the rear end to do the recommended service and said the bearings were destroyed - $1900 to fix!! I know the dealer is going to upcharge compared to an Indy (or DIY but don't have time for that), but does this sound in the ballpark for the dealer to fix it? What typically causes this to happen?

That much just to replace the bearings? Sounds a little high. In your title you said replace the rear end. If they are going to replace the ring, pinion and bearings the amount sounds about right. If your bearings are bad, you might have destroyed the gears as well. Let me know exactly what they are going to do for $1900.

'08 WK with 85K miles and I too have the rear end drone/whine. I thought it was a wheel bearing, swapped in a new on and no joy. From what I've read it's either something internal to the differential (bearings/gears) or others say it could be the driveshaft.

Would love to know which one and the best way to diagnose it!

It is difficult to explain how to diagnose if you have never worked as a mechanic. It is more of a "feel" thing. I'll attempt to break it down:

-If the drone is constant but increases with speed it may be a wheel bearing, pinion bearing, driveshaft bearing (if applicable).

-If the drone increases when accelerating or decelerating it might be the ring and pinion mesh or differential bearings.

-If the drone only occurs when doing tight turns, it is the spider gears and/or friction plates in the differential.

Your best bet is to remove the rear diff cover and have a look in there. Hope this helps!
