noise when tires slip

Just recently purchased a 2005 GC. My son and I went out looking for mud last weekend and had a blast. I did notice that when we were in real slippery stuff and the tires were spinning a weird noise would happen sometimes. Seemed to happen when one or more wheels was slipping. I am hoping it is just the way the Quadratrac I uses the ABS brakes to slow the spinning wheel. Kind of a disturbing noise the first time you hear it. Never heard it except when we were in 4wd stuff. Does this sound normal?

Re: noise when tires slip

Completely normal. As you suggest, it's the traction control system using the brakes to slow/stop the spinning wheel across the axle (mimicking a LSD).

Re: noise when tires slip

Yep, these things are BORING in the slick stuff... I went to a parking lot with a fresh coat of snow 2 years ago (I miss snow) and tried to have a little fun, wasnt going to happen. 4 low disables the traction control and I never put it in 4 low but that should help with the fun a bit.
