Noisy Transfer Case

I am a licensed dealer in Alberta Canada and I do this as a hobby on my own.

I am looking at buying a 2008 Grand Cherokee Laredo 3.7 V6 with 136000km (85000 miles) on it but the condition report says that it has a "Noisy Transfer Case"

I'm wondering if this is common for this model Jeep and that it is an easy fix or should I be worried and stay away from it?

Any advise would be appreciated.

Re: Noisy Transfer Case

Hey FryGuy,

I get a little bit of whine from the driveline when I let off of the gas at highway speed.

Welcome aboard btw.

Re: Noisy Transfer Case

Thank you for the feedback. I think I'll take my chance and get it on Wednesday.

If anyone needs actual sales data that are more current than the blackbook, let me know and I'll post it.

Re: Noisy Transfer Case

I have an 05 with 70,000 and I dont hear anything. If it was me I would be concerned...i would take it to a mechanic at a minimum before you think about buying it

Re: Noisy Transfer Case

Well first off where are you purchasing the vehicle from? Is it a jeep dealer, private seller, off the road lot with 12 cars on it lol etc. Also have you taken it for a test drive? Give us some idea what the on road evaluation is.

This will determine how I personally would go about it. Worst case scenario tell them you want to go take it for a test drive and have an appointment pre-set up at the dealership and have someone take a look at it. Then they will quote you/rob you with no ski mask/ and give you an idea what it is.

Re: Noisy Transfer Case

Thanks for answering. It is none of the above. It is on a Adesa wholesale lot where all the lease returns are sold off by banks and where they give a condition report but it is the impression of the person writing it up. I can't take it for a test drive but it will influence the sales price. All wholesale vehicles are sold this way.

I just thought I'd ask to see if it was a common problem.

Re: Noisy Transfer Case

No common tcase problems behind the 3.7. The NV140 is a super simple setup and quite durable as well. Even if the previous owner flogged and trashed it there really wouldn't be much in repairs or even replacement for the average do it yourself mechanic.
I'd bet the whine that was diagnosed as a tcase is either the power steering pump or axles...those are MUCH more common problems.

Did you hear the noise? Probably nothing if you don't hear it right away. I love the sludge motor cars

Re: Noisy Transfer Case

I have an 05 GC - When I turn there is a significant noise in the front - I have been told that this is in the transfer case and is a "Common problem" and can only be resolved by replacing the transfer case. Crank the wheels tightly left and right , if it "moans or grinds" I would run away before purchasing it. (By the way - I have had the fluids checked and changed - and that has not solved the problem) Any help appreciated

That sounds more like a power steering pump noise. I went through 3 on my WJ....
