Oil contamination in cooling system-Any ideas?

Motor is 5.7 with 84K in 2005 WK Limited. Have been throwing a code P0128 on a recent consistant basis. Decided to have the thermostat changed out and coolant flushed and replaced. Head tech. noted an "oily contamination" in coolant and thermostat rubber was totally deteriorated. Any ideas please? His thoughts are possible head gasket? I sure hope not!!! Thanks for any direction.

Re: Oil contamination in cooling system-Any ideas?

Pretty uncommon problem thats for sure, head gasket would make sence.

If you bought it used, I would keep an eye on it, the oil should float on the coolant so you should be able to see an accumulation in the overflow or in the filler neck if it is crossing over... I havent done much cooling system work on the 5.7l wk grand my only other guess would be an oil cooler failure (IF it were internal to the radiator, and i dont think there even is one on the grand).

Ya, unfortunately sounds like a head gasket to me as well. Oil mixed with coolant is normally the number one tip off to it. Do you notice more steam or vapour in your exhaust or a slight antifreeze smell to the exhaust? Rusty color on any of the sparkplugs? Those are also symptoms of a head gasket which may help you to confirm it.

You'll want to confirm if it is a head gasket, ASAP. Left too long and you open yourself up to a heap of possible, even more exspensive, repairs!
