So, my 2009 JGC threw a P0717 error (goes into gimp mode and locks down the tranny).
It's a bad input speed sensor on the transmission.. no biggy.. UNLESS you have the Mercedes transmission (which my 3.7 does apparently) and not the 45RFE that most every other model has in it.
If it had the 45RFE, it would be a simple bolt to replace the sensor.
But, as it's the Merc, you have to drop the tranny and replace the entire assembly.
Part ran about $250 plus fluids and what not... grand total was about $800.
you do NOT need to drop the trans, its the lead frame where the speed sensors are located, it mounts above the valve body, dropping the pan (easiest pan EVER), remove the guide bushing (the plug bushing) and drop the valve body. unsnap the lead frame, snap the new one in and reverse procedure.
Hello guys,
My Jeep is having the same problem. I'm getting the same code P0717. Dealer recommended replacing the Electrohydraulic Unit. Did you chanage just the sensor or the whole unit? price is a lot different for each.
My 08 Grand Cherokee is throwing the same code and the dealer is saying $750-$1200 to fix because the tranny needs to be dropped. He insists the speed sensor are within the tranny, does anyone know if this is true?
The two speed sensors on the NAG1 transmission are part of the electrical control unit, which is attached to the hydraulic control unit. Both units can be removed as one module after just dropping the oil pan, no need to remove the whole transmission for that. Ofcourse the stealer likes to tell you a story to explain the high cost to replace the part.
Yes that is correct. I had mine replaced and it's working great. While you're there it's a good time to change the tranny oil as well. Up here the dealers wanted $900 just for the part.
Yeah, dealership want 950 for the part. Around 1500 total. Can almost get a used trans for that. Found the part for 80 bucks and doing the change tomorrow.
