Passenger Air Bag Light

I have an 05 Grand Cherokee and recently the airbag lights came on. The passenger airbag light and the one on the dash. This only happens when the passenger seat is empty. If I have someone riding with me neither light comes on. I tried unplugging the battery, checking all the connections under the seat, and then hooking back up the battery but got nothing. Any ideas on what this could be? Thanks

the passenger light should come on when no one is riding with you, at least mine does. this is so that if you are in a crash you dont waste two airbags. My primary dash airbag light came on once and it was because i touched a fuse under the hood. it sits in the yellow cradle that holds two fuses. I would check that.

This is likely an indication of negative seat weight, always make sure that nothing is under the seats, if there is something under the seat and the seat is moved back or down to where the item is pressing up on the seat, when the passenger gets out it can see negative seat weight and it doesn't like that. If there is nothing under the seat you may be looking at needing to have the seat recalibrated at the dealer.

x2 exactly what he said. hopefully there is something under there because recalibration is expensive and can only be done at some dealers.

Been reading a lot of posts and my issue is the opposite of what most people are experiencing. My passenger airbag light does not come on when nothing is in the front seat. It doesn't seem to be a safety hazard like if the passenger light was on the all the time. However, I don't feel very confident the airbag system is working as it should. I looked under the seat; everything seems clear. Also, the main airbag light does not illuminate except for briefly at startup as it should. The passenger light does the same. Any thoughts?

This may be a programmable feature that is not set on yours.

My Canadian vehicle keeps the passenger airbag armed at all times, unless the seat sensor detects a light object on the seat and then it is disarmed.

You can see if you put a light weight on the seat when the vehicle is running (or press down with your hand) and hold it for a few seconds if the airbag turns off. If so, I would say yours is programmed like mine and is working properly, just differently.
