Exclamation Please help exercise my electrical demon!

Can't figure out what the common denominator is that is causing this electrical problem in my 05 WK limited 5.7 with 102,000 miles on it. Sometimes it does it when I'm driving down the road sometimes it happens at a dead stop but at random my electronics seem to just short out. Some times it will happen every time I'm in the jeep driving down the road for a couple of days in a row, and sometimes it will go several months without doing it. seems totally random. It doesn't mater if the road is wet, or rough. Doesn't seem to happen only when it rains or when I go through a car wash or hit bumps or anything I can't seem to narrow it down to any environmental changes or anything of the sort. I replaced the battery about 2 weeks ago (2nd one in two years). When the electronics short out the jeep doesn't stall or Sputter or anything. Seems to only kill the dash , radio, ac, and headlamps and internal lighting for a second then comes back on. Any help would be great. The jeep dealership doesn't seem to be interested in helping me figure out if it's covered under my extended warranty or not... I've taken it in at least five times for this issue, claims like "its an abs sensor" or "we noticed you have a slow leak on one of your power steering lines" or some other thing that sounds un probable to me to be related is always the issue. They never say things like it could be a harness rub somewhere, or an exposed wire, or anything that could cause them to spend more then five minutes trying to find the issue. I need whatever help I can get. I would love to resolve this issue before my extended warranty ends.

Here is a link to a video I took of the problem:

Re: Please help exercise my electrical demon!

Sounds like your electrical system is already getting plenty of exercise. Maybe we should try to exorcise it though, LOL.

Start with the easy stuff first. The first thing I'd do is check all fuses affecting the system(s) that are intermittant. (If it's only one circuit, you may want to just replace that fuse.) Otherwise, pull the fuses, and reinsert to insure good contact. Next I would unplug and reinsert the huge plug on the Forward Control Module. Before you do that though, look closely to insure it is currently properly plugged in. Also, when apart, check for corrosion, or pins that may be loose, and may not making good contact....arcing and such. If this doesn't work, you may have to resort to checking the Factory Shop Manual for the affected circuits. I am sure there are other plugs throughout these systems and, heaven forbid, you have to tear into the dash. Good luck on this one, and keep us posted.

Re: Please help exercise my electrical demon!

SORRY, I forgot to mention that when you do these things, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FIRST.

Thanks for the input. At least I have a starting point now, and maybe I can give the mechanic an idea where the problem could possibly be.

Re: Please help exercise my electrical demon!

Intermittant issues are sometimes the hardest to find, as they must be caught when they're malfunctioning. Sometimes it you can get someone to sit in the vehicle and another person moving, shaking and jiggling wire bundles and plugs under the hood, by the FCM, to the firewall, and if need be into the cabin, you then may be able to isolate the area of the problem. May not be an easy one to find though but, as I said, start with the easy stuff first and if you don't find anything, you'll have to start digging into the things that are a little more difficult to get to and check. Again, good luck.

Re: Please help exercise my electrical demon!

Mine has a similar issue at times. It happened again a few days ago, and knowing there were issues with ignition switches on 05's I jiggled the key in the ignition while it was happening, and it stopped. Hasn't happened since, but I'm sure it will so I plan on replacing my ignition switch in the near future.

Re: Please help exercise my electrical demon!

Good call. That is a real possiblity and a fairly common fail item that causes several weird symptoms.

Re: Please help exercise my electrical demon!

Many Jeep owners have had this exact same problem including me. I fixed it with an aftremarket ignition switch. Its been approx 14 months and maybe 20000 miles now and not one recurrance. See all my posts in this thread:
06 Grand Cherokee - Electrical Problem wih Dash Cluster

Good Luck.
