Possible EGR gone bad

Hello I have looked around and I think my jeep is starting to show signs of a bad EGR. About 2 weeks ago I drove back home about 150 miles and the service engine light came on. Had it checked and I don't remember the code but it was something about the EGR. The jeep has also been idling a little high and riding a little rough. Seems it surges and isnt very smooth in 1st and 2nd gear. I called the dealership and they said the EGR part alone was 119 dollars. Is this what everyone has paid? Rockauto has them for around 40-50 bucks, is there something different about these compared to the dealer?

Also thought I would replace the PCV valve and when I talked to the dealership the guy said they call it the crank case vent valve and that's 44.57. Is there something different between a PCV valve and a crank case vent valve or are these the same thing?

I have a 2005 5.7L with about 70,000 miles. All the maintenance is up to date

Re: Possible EGR gone bad

Certainly sounds like it could be the EGR.

I replaced mine with one from Rock Auto and have had no problems with it. It's also a relatively simple job to do yourself (with some great write-ups on here), if you want to save the labour cost.

PCV valve = positive crankcase ventilation valve = crank case vent valve.

This is also a simple swap to do yourself.

Re: Possible EGR gone bad

I put in an Advanced Auto EGR; $40 which looks exactly the same as stock. Takes more time to remove and install the intake than the EGR, which is a piece of cake. PCV valve was about $30 and takes a few seconds to replace. Dealer prices are a joke on these parts, and most others.
