Replacing Hood Release Handle & access??!!

I went to 'pop' the hood on my WK and the metal cable and hood release handle separated. After looking at the backside of the release handle I can see that it broke, where it holds the cable in place.

My question is, what is the best way to replace this handle? I already purchased a cable and handle release kit, but only am planning on using the handle only (the cable is fine)

How do I remove the trim piece or kick panel?

Any tips/advice is really appreciated! Thanks!

This thread seems to have a VERY general overview of the process, though no details on how to remove the trim (it likely just pops off after a screw or two): if you ever break your hood release handle, here ya go!
