Sensor problem?

My 2001 Grand Cherokee with the straight six will start but but quits right away and if i can manage to keep it running the speedo bounces all over the place and the over drive turns off if i rev it up. Sounds like a sensor but which one anybody know?

Re: Sensor problem?

You have a WJ. This is the WK forum. You might find your answer over there.

Welcome to the garage.
Do the key dance to see what it gives: ignition key off/on three times and leave in on at the third time. The odometer will show DONE when all ok, or a fault code(s). Let us know what you find.
If it shows DONE, then first try to measure the voltage at the battery, with engine off and then with engine on. Is it higher then 15 V with engine running? If yes, disconnect the alternator cable and start again. (don't connect nor disconnect the cable with engine running. Voltage spikes can ruin other electrical components.)
We have a similar problem now on a 4.7, which probably is or the alternator, or the PCM.

Re: Sensor problem?

Did not get any codes, just DONE. Killed the battery trying to get it started and it did not take very long. I did manage to get a reading of eleven off of the meter. You would think it is the alternator but would that cause the speedo to jump and overdrive to turn off? I could have the alt tested but have not had any time. And dont even know what the PCM is. Any help would be great before I have to take it to the shop.
