service electric brake system warning.. need help!

Ok so I was driving my jeep tonight and started down a hill that had some ice on it and I slid a little bit hit the brakes some to keep it tamed down and from sliding all over the place. Now my service electric brake light is on and when I turn and apply the brake while in motion there is a grinding noise... Dunno what's up with it.. anyone else have this issue? It's a 05 ltd hemi.. 72k miles... Any advice would be helpful.

Re: service electric brake system warning.. need help!

Grinding noise doesnt sound good.... Your likely going to need to get it into the dealer to find what the service 4wd light is on for. There is a flash for the final drive control module regarding erroneous dtc's causing the "service 4wd" message, that may be all the problem is with that.

As for the grinding when applying the brake, when was the last time the brakes were done?

Re: service electric brake system warning.. need help!

Many people have reported that clearing the codes they have not come back, so you may not deal with it again, I would suggest not bringing it to ANY shop to inspect for that particular concern until it happens again having cleared the codes they wont be able to determine anything.

Grinding while braking would lead me to believe it is brake related maybe a rock stuck in the caliper or similar... could be wrong but that would be the place to start for me.

Re: service electric brake system warning.. need help!

If it makes you feel better the service electrical brakes comes on and off in my vehicle all.the time. It doesn't stay on, nor does it throw any codes. I spoke to a mechanic about it, who owns a Jeep and says that it's common for Jeeps to throw this code when you have erratic braking or brake hard but it wasn't an issue if it didn't stay on and wasn't throwing any codes. The other day it was freezing and same as you I went over a patch of ice when I went to brake on the ice my brake started pulsating and what sounded like grinding and when I stepped on the gas I heard my grinding more I was like oh oh that doesn't sound right. So I pulled over to the side of the road, and I looked over the patch of ice and it was pure ice with rough surfaces, I feel bumps and rough road more due to me needing to replace my sway bars and stabilizer links. I remembered before I parked to the side of the road I was backing up into another patch of ice and it was making a grinding braking noise, I went to the back of the vehicle and noticed the ice was cracked, so I concluded that the grinding noise were the wheels braking the ice and the brakes pulsating where because the tires were trying to grip the ice and the tires were sliding. It never made any other sound on smooth road and its been a week it's happened. Oh yeah that same day not to far away from that patch of ice this stupid driver decided to get outta his vehicle by not looking back and swinging his door open on a one way tight street while I was passing by his vehicle. I had to maneuver out of the way real quick so their door wouldn't be part of my grill.nearly hitting a parked car, and when I stopped and looked at him for an explanation he was like oooppps sorry. what a dumbass. Anyway if what I said makes sense just ride and keep close eye on stuff, me personally, mine hasn't been serious after a while of watchful eye I forgot about it, but it's taught me to be an even more careful driver. GOod luck.

Re: service electric brake system warning.. need help!

the grinding sound is the abs activating. Just do some preventative checking of brake fluid etc. If it continues to occur we will go from there

I also forgot to mention that the mechanic told me usually when the service electrical brake system comes on that it is associated with the ABS kicking in.

Re: service electric brake system warning.. need help!

Sorry, I need to correct information, I dont know what I was thinking when I read this the first time, "service electronic brake system" is not the "service 4wd system" I was thinking of.

That said, this is an indication of a fault sensed in the system not an indication of ABS kicking in.

^ This is correct. The light is an indicator that something is wrong with the ABS system.

Ive had the code pulled and says I have a fault ABS sensor on one of my hubs. Sensor are cheap/easy to replace I've just never gotten around to it :/ I mean cars never used to have ABS so I figure I may as well see what the "good ole' days" were like haha
