Smoking on Start-Up

2008 5.7 with 55k.

I am not parked on any steep incline, my driveway is pitched but barely.

I have not noticed this before, today was the first time.

My Oil Catch Can was full, maybe this caused it?

When I first installed the can I got next to nothing over the first few weeks / months. Now in the winter it seems like the can is filling up very quickly. And now the smoke.

Any idea?

I did all the routine maintenance within 500 miles of purchase @ 50k miles.

A good change that the full oil catch can is causing the smoke. How much oil does fit in that can? Sounds odd that it fills so quickly.

If I had to guess, a cup? It's about the diameter of a standard 16oz poland spring water bottle but only 1/2 as tall. So probably 8 oz.

I emptied it out. Let's see what happens today. Also I do not drive much. It usually sits in the driveway Sunday night to Friday. I get rides to and from work and rarely use it at night after work. However the day of the smoke, I started it, moved it out of the driveway in the morning and shut it off, all in the span of under 2 minutes. Maybe that had something to do with it also?

For what it's worth, I cleaned the catch can that day and have been paying careful attention to the car as it starts every day and have not seen any smoke since.

Re: Smoking on Start-Up

If it's a Billet can, it'll hold about 4 oz. In the winter time, especially in very wet/damp areas, a lot of the stuff that the catch can picks up is condensation mixed with a little oil....many call it mayonaise because it's kind of milky looking. In any case, it'll look a lot different than the can contents will look in the summer time. In the winter, mine will sometimes fill the can in less than 600-800 miles. And yes, if the can is full, all that stuff is going through the combustion cycle and out the exhaust in the form of probably mostly white smoke.

Thank you, thank you. I have gotten the "mily" thick fluid 2 times now (both times this winter, and I live on Long Island surrounded by water and dampness..). I was panicked, thinking I had water in my oil. Bot times I drained a little from my oil pan and it looked fine. Glad to know this much filling & milkyness is common and OK.

Re: Smoking on Start-Up

You'll probably also see it under the oil filler cap during the winter. When it's not as damp in the summer all should look normal.
