I bought a 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. I have 24000 KM's on it and the brakes are squeeking. They have been doing this on and off for about a month now. I took it in for service and was told that it was normal for the brakes to squeek! The service manager said that the brakes in those vehicles will squeek. I have had many vehicles and never had brakes squeeking unless there was dirt in them or something was wrong, like the brake pads. I have always bought Ford vehicles but thought I would try the Jeep out for a change, I love the look of it and how it handles. I am not satisfied at all, if this is a normal function of the vehicle!! I don't want to be pulling into a parking lot or drive through and all I can hear is sqeeking brakes!!!!!!
My question is, is this normal for these Jeeps to have squeeky brakes or should I be taking it to another service centre for repair?
You can make ANY brakes on ANY vehicle squeal. It all depends on how you apply pressure. If you put light pressure when you stop they will do this. Try using only firm pressure at a closer distance.
There is absolutely no reason for your brakes to be squealing. If the dealer put on new pads and/or rotors they probably installed the cheapest things possible just so they could tell you "that thing just got new brakes". The brakes on my WK were pretty much brand new and squeaking when I bought it so I bought a set of drilled and slotted rotors with nice ceramic pads, put them on myself in under 2 hours and haven't heard a thing since. They also feel better. Your service center is wrong, and there is absolutely no reason you should have to brake hard to keep them from squealing.
Brake squeal can be a biproduct of driving habits... That said I can promise you that taking the pads running a roloc across the face of it and applying anti squeal spray to the back of the pad your issue will go away. Sorry you have to deal with this!
And bsw989, my guess would be they didnt replace anything and if they did it would have been mopar OEM equipment (not value line or auto store cheapies)... But considering brakes would have been a 12(month) 12k mile item my guess judging by it being a 10 that its over the 1 year mark so any repairs from here will be out of pocket unless he finds a friendly service manager looking to make a happy customer.
I had brake squeak issues on my wife's 06 WK after doing a brake job on it a few months back with EBC brand rotors and pads. I took them off, cleaned all the mating surfaces with a wire brush, applied Loctite's brake anti-sqeak product on the back of the pads and have not had an issue ever since.
