Starting issue

I'm at a loss. My 79 cj7 won't start. At first it was just every now and then, like a short. Then one day I ran the battery down so low trying to crank it. After some thought, and another battery, I replaced the starter silinoid and the ignition switch, now my hot leads to the silinoid and to the starter get hot when it's trying to crank. No spark to the plugs until I release the key switch. It's an AMC 304 V8. Please help.
