Starting Issues

My wife's 05 WK is experiencing some issues with starting. I'll be at work and she will call and tell me her jeep wont start, she said it would continuously crank and it would finally start after maybe 30-45 sec. Today she went to take the kids to school (i was home) and it wouldn't even crank but had full power everywhere else. I go out to try to figure it out and it did the same thing to me. I tried it a couple times with nothing so i turned the key to the on position put it in drive then back to park (it rolled a bit bc our driveway has a slight incline) and it started up 3 times in a row. There were no CEL codes so not exactly sure what is going on. It has the 4.7 engine, auto trans, and around 100k, i also replaced the transmission shift module about 4 months ago.

Re: Starting Issues

Sounds like the starter motor itself or a bad battery.

Although you say everything else works, it is possible that the battery does not have enough power to turn the motor over, but can still run accessory items. Worth getting it checked.

If the battery is fine, I would check the wires to the starter for corrosion and/or a loose connection. I'm not sure how accessible the 4.7 starter motor is, but if possible you can always try banging on it as the key is turned to see if it catches.

It could be the interlock, but that wouldn't cause it to crank and not start. It could also be where the starter motor engages the flywheel, but that would explain the cranking without starting, but not the failing to crank!

If it was me, I would replace the starter to be sure that was working properly, and then continuing on from there if need be.

Re: Starting Issues

Thanks for the advice. I have checked everything on the top side for corrosion or loose wires and all looks good. I will have to pull the skid plate to get access to the starter iirc. I will check the voltage of the battery and maybe have it load tested. Thanks again.

Seriously though, the WK electronics are notoriously picky when it comes to voltages. If your battery is even a touch off of spec, all kinds of things can happen with the electronics. I've heard of just about every type of electrical related problem being traced back to batteries that were "good" but just slightly out of spec.

Re: Starting Issues

So what are the specs on the battery? I had it load tested and it was good, but I tested voltage and it was between 13.80 and 14.00. When I checked it I had every possible accessory on and it stayed in that range, also checked during startup and it didn't drop much. I didn't expect it to stay at 14.00 during startup considering it draws a lot of amps to do so. Lastly it hasn't done it again since I first posted this, it's totally random.

Re: Starting Issues

A fully charged battery shows 12.8V (half an hour after being charged). With engine on, the voltage should go to 13.5-14.5 V.
Engine starting after 30 seconds cranking or not cranking at all seems to be two seperate problems.

Re: Starting Issues

That's exactly what I thought, but at first it was a random cranking issue then out of the blue it wouldn't crank the engine. Could it be related idk, but it hasn't happened since.
