They told me there was 3 tsb updates that were never done by the dealership I bought it (used) from. When I left the dealership and got on it, we were off like a prom dress. I couldn't believe the difference. All it did was change the shift points and lockup but what a difference. I have noticed if the conditions are perfect for it (angle of hill, amount of load, south east winds) i can feel a little something but nowhere near what it was. Now I also have a surge under light acceleration. Also seem to feel it throughout various driving speeds here and there. I have previously changed plugs to Bosch platinum 4, new tps, and clean oil out of my map every (2,000 miles). So I'm wondering if we're in a similar shaped boat. I'm wondering if the iac is not operating properly, I know at idle it doesn't idle perfectly smooth, will iac affect anything over idle? Hmmm things that keep me awake at night.
Yep interesting. My idle is not as smooth as it should be. The car pulses/shutters more under load (full car of people) and drives better on a light load. The dealsership thought it was the tps telling the transfer case to open and close at the wrong times. But under examination they could not fint anything mechanically wrong with the car. I have wasted so much time trying to pinpoint the actual problem with my jeep. After they did the pcm update that was overdue the car shifted alot better and accelerated better but the problem still remained. I havent done any mods to the car to really start this problem the only major ones are (Hid w/relays, Dual battery setup/ CAI/ Magnaflow)

Re: Surging, pulsing while driving

It's funny that you mention transfer case. My shift motor went out on me end of last year. It had a service 4wd message and when I unplugged the shift motor the inside of the plug was full of corrosion. Ended up having to get the motor and the harness replaced. I noticed no difference in how it drove when the shift motor went. Only thing I noticed was 13 mpg, back up to 14.9 now that it's fixed. Got a whopping 18 on a 6 hr highway drive while keeping it under 70. So whatever my surging problem, it affects gas mileage. Used to get 21 on the highway.

Re: Surging, pulsing while driving

see i keep thinking im missing a TSB, but when my jeep was in the shop in the last year all TSBs were updated as was anything else PCM related. i recently took my jepe back to stock tune to see if that was the problem- no dice. still does the shuttle shifting around the 3rd/4th into 5th gear area. im going to be adding a sonnax line pressure booster soon to see if that will firm up my shifts as well as changing both tranny filters and draining and filling the tranny...

i read somewhere (maybe it was here), that the installation of the tranny filter wrong can cause the tranny to act up a bit.

I also have this problem, and mine is also the same year/engine. Mine is also worst around 40mph while trying to hold a steady speed. I havae noticed that mine is worse when running the A/C.

I also seafoamed mine recently and got absolutely zero smoke. I do think it idles and runs better though.

Well that could be a possibility seeing that pepboys replaced mine lol.

I got smoke when i let the car sit for an hour. It helped with idle, but not with pulsing, if you open up the hood you can actually see the engine shaking more then normally during idle. The pusling usually occurs when trying to hold a steady speed and going up an incline. The tranny seems to not know what to do.

mine occurs on flat surfaces too- like merging into traffic and not necessarily getting on it. it kind hunts for a gear, feels like its saying "do i want to stay in 3rd or hit 4th? ill go to 4th, no wait ill stay in 3rd.... f it ill go to 4th".

its worse with the AC on lol

I have to try the ac. I believe it really sucked when i had it on. I am not near my jeep at the moment. Driving a Renault 1.8 liter take about power .

My problem pretty much occured every where. It didnt know what to do and i literally had to almost floor the car after it started pulsing to actually accelerate and get me where i had to go.

Re: Surging, pulsing while driving

When i was young and dumb i took my jeep to pepboys for transmission work. They put mobil 1 and valveline synthetic tranny fluid in the trans. They didnt have enouugh of one so they had to mix it up. Had the filter changed about 10,000 miles ago with a complete flush and i believe the problem started after this service. But can not pin point it. I have taken my jeep to the dealership, they kept it for over a week diagnosing it, sending all the results to chrysler and they said every sensor is working correctly while it pulses. there response (wait until something actually breaks then take it to us) :s what BS. There has to be something wrong with it.....
