Re: Surging, pulsing while driving

Some more weird info for you guys.

1- the surging problem gets worse when the car is under load, (ex. a full load of people in the car, towing something, or with my 22's on which weigh a good bit more then stock)

2- when i used the hypertech on regular gas tune it actually made the problem worse.

3- When i set the hypertech to premium tune it improved the drivability of the jeep and rough idle but problem still persists with the surging. Yesterday while driving it was actually having a hard time staying in gear, all of a sudden i lost power and a few seconds later downshifted.

I'm thinking your tcm is bad.

Re: Surging, pulsing while driving

Is the tcm inside the transmission because aamco replaced everything. circuit board, valve body, torque coverter. or is it part of the ecu.

It's inside the vehicle inside the shifter assembly it's under the shifter handle. It controls the whole transmission, shifting, torque lock up, as well as overdrive and gear selection it's expensive about 400 bucks, when u had my tranny rebuilt the shop didn't replace this part so I had them do this too and the total for all was $2900 granted I had performance clutches installed as well as converter.

If it were a pressure related issue due to programming, couldn't a tuning company like diablo make a custom tune that adjusts that?

Also, madanio, when you press the accelerator down farther, does the shuttering actually go away before it downshifts? Or does the downshift cause the shuttering to go away?

Re: Surging, pulsing while driving

This is very interesting.

Um, when i press the gas pedal the surging does not go away until it downshifts. My tranny with the new ujoints cost 4500 with updated valve body. come with 2 year warranty. The owner was telling me about another wk that had to have the shifter assembly replaced as well.

That's pretty pricey, but at least you got a warranty. I paid $2900 for a complete rebuild and new performance torque converter and performance clutches, the guy I took it to only charges 50 an hour great guy gave me a 2 year warranty too, but I think he wa580 nag 1 trans in the 3.7 is harder to rebuild than 545 rfe at least that's what my trans guy said, I called him on your behalf tonight madanio and he said the same thing, he said first he would pull up on his scan tool the tcm and see what it's telling the torque converter to do, and if necessary replace the tcm he did say that the labor is less than an hour to replace the tcm. Good luck in trouble shooting!

Re: Surging, pulsing while driving

Apparently this trans uses special mercedes parts I was told which is why it costs more. also labor at aamco is close to 100 an hour i believe.

Thanks bro, i really appreciate it you have really been very helpful throughout this whole process.

Why is it that jeeps with different engine/trans combos are experiencing the exact same problem?

Re: Surging, pulsing while driving

Ok guys here's a little update. went back to the regular grade gasoline tune and I tried a little experiment. when the jeep is in the "auto-stick" function and I am changing the gears the problem does not happen at all and it drives like a monster!
