Re: Surging, pulsing while driving

I finally got this surging fixed in my 2006 Commander 3.7. I have a list of things they did, I am not sure which one actually fixed it because there was another issue in addition to this one that was more severe. I am reading this from my invoice (which by the way was paid by Chrysler in full even at 87k miles, we had an extended warrantee till 85k miles or feb 2013, but I have been complaining about this issue for over four years) but here it goes…

Transfer case remove and install for recondition
Carrier transfer case
Seal output shaft
Nut flange to output shaft
shaft intermediate
shaft input
seal input
seal output
seal oil
fluid automatictransmissionatf
seal output shaft replace
range planetary input gear front bearing
replace transmission per star and distric rep
Transmission replace automatic nag1 equipped with 3.7 4X4
trans with torque converter
cooler condenser and trans cooler
fluid automatictransmissionatf
nut hex flange lock
bolt hex head
seal a/c line
gasket a/c line
reverse flush and flow check cooler
wheelhouse one fender left one or all
condenser replace all others
system test recovery and recharge

***EDIT*** to be clear, I am talking about surging at between 1500-1600 rpms where the engine doesn't seem to be able to decide a steady rpm, which revs it up and down between those rpms.

The other problem I had which was more severe was a rumble feeling like the plastic skid plate was flapping in the wind, or at least I thought that was the problem when I took it in. We later found out that the skid plate was secure and that the rumbling was coming from the trans.

The mechanic seems to think the surging was cause by rust and wear in the input shaft on the transfer case. Which they did find and they did show me. The put a new input shaft in and they believe that fixed the surging.

All of this was determined by working with tier two star technicians at chrysler, and some tier three. Tier one techs were either no help or would not help until I had the second issue. The surging issue was first, rumbling was second and most recent, like within the last two months. Surging has been going on for a very very long time.

Re: Surging, pulsing while driving

Hi Guys,

Sorry to jump in on this old thread, but I thought you may be interested to here that I have the same problem on my 2002 WJ, and it has a 5cyl 2.7l mercedes diesel engine. It only surges under load, in the top two gears, particularly noticable at 70-80mph, uphill on a motorway. I'm not sure if the WJ and WK models share the same transmission, or if the european diesel model has the same trans as a petrol? I have a feeling it might because the shifter is on the passenger side of the centre console.
Just thought this information might be useful!!
Feel free to me for driving a diesel

All the best Al

Re: Surging, pulsing while driving

Just FYI-
I have 05 JGC 5.7 and I had recall "flash update" done last Thursday and now my Jeep shutters at 30-40 MPH with 1000/1300 RPM's. My jeep ran fine before this flash update to transfer case module.
Wish i could roll back the flash...

The updated programming should not have anything to do with your symptoms. The flash simply adds another voltage check the the shift command.

What could have happened is they reset the adaptives on the transmission (either by disconnecting the battery or clearing through the WiTech). If you give it some time to re-learn your driving style it may get better.

That's the only way I could see this service affecting the transmission's behavior.

Well, This morning I got check engine light on and code is P0406 which related to EGR valve.

The egr valves are a common issue on the hemis. Cheap to replace and easy to fix!

Re: Surging, pulsing while driving

Ok guys. Took the jeep in today we hooked it up to a trailer and took a test drive with a mechanic. He said I have a lot of power loss especially up hills and the engine Boggs down. He is maybe thinking a clogged catalytic converter.

Re: Surging, pulsing while driving

Damn you've been through hell Madanio. Kinda makes me wanna sell my wife's '06 :/
I've had "Hemi shudder" for many years, never figured it out since I'm well out of warranty. But my mileage sucks, so I'm thinking trans related. I've done several trans fluid changes, and it seems every time I have a split filter. Even with an OE filter, and new return filter. My fluid is good and unburnt, but that post about burnt clutches set my hair on end.

Here's to a cheap solution to our problems.

Re: Surging, pulsing while driving

Anyone have any ideas what would cause no power to the point where I have to floor the gas pedal. Happens a lot more under load. It's a pain in the ass on the highway especially to pass people.
