Temporary Vibration when Accelerating, after a hard brake application

Hi Guys,

Need some advice on an issue im facing since recently.

whenever i hit the brakes somewhat moderately, (IE:- whenever im not using the brakes to coast to a stop) i get a mechanical "thud" noise from the left rear , & when i hit the gas to start moving again, i get a somewhat noisy vibration which last for about a second.

this doesnt happen if im coasting to a stop, or if i apply the brakes very lightly to stop. definitly seems connected to the "Thud" noise i described.

personally im inclined to think its connected to the brakes system.

Was hoping to get an answer on what to look for.

Thanks in advance!

I would want to check out the control arms in the rear. If you have a failed bushing or loose hardware it would allow the rear axle to rotate which could lead to a thud, furthermore with the axle rotating and changing the pinion angle you could get some serious driveline vibration.

Actually i was thinking along similar lines,

I had the same issue exactly the way you described it happen to my tired old CJ5. i braked real hard once to avaoid a collision & the rear leaf spring pads broke their welds & the axle rotated down binding the driveshaft pretty bad.

The vibration was similar to what i was experiancing , albeit at a lower scale.

I hadnt thought it would be possible on a coil spring setup though. i will definitely check it. thanks !!

a quick check would be to power brake it in drive and reverse (via an assistant) so you can watch and see if the axle wraps either direction, the motion should be pretty well prevented by the upper and lower control arms so if you see movement I would head that direction.
