Tow Hitch Light Connector

My Overland has the class IV towing hitch, and off to the left of the receiver mounting hole is the electrical wiring connector plugs. The connector that plugs into the electrical outlet on the jeep does not seem to be supplied. There is of course two plugs, one for a 4 wire setup, and another for either 5 of 7 I can't remember. I need the wire assembly that connects the 4 wire plug to the lights on the trailer. Do I have to purchase this from Jeep or can I get one other places, and what is it called? I have pulled a lot of boats and trailers but this is my first actual factory installed hitch with the built in wiring connectors.

Re: Tow Hitch Light Connector

steve, it sounds like you have what is expected. you have both a 4 pin and a round one. getting fromthe jeep to the xxxxxxxx that you wish to tow is on you. you will need to add enough wire and the proper connector to yur towed vehicle to reach the jeep.

Thanks, but I know that. I am looking for where you purchase the wire that connects the two. Do you have to buy it from jeep or can you purchase one off EBAY or J C Whitney or somewhere like that. If any one on here has purchased one where did you get it?

Re: Tow Hitch Light Connector

Steve, can you post a photo of the trailer wire harness you are seeking to connect? Sounds like your prior tow rig had an aftermarket wiring harness from the vehicle that allowed it to extend back to the trailer connection vs. the Jeep bumper connector plug?

Suggest Etrailer or Pacific Trailers for wiring harness extentions, they both have excellent websites. Etrailer has a thorough self-guided help section as well.

Re: Tow Hitch Light Connector

I think I see how it works now. I thought It would take some special connector to fit in the jeep receptical but actually it looks like a standard 4 wire flat plug that you can get almost anywhere will work. You just have to make sure that the end that connects to the jeep has three male prongs and one female prong. The other end would need to match your trailer connector.

Re: Tow Hitch Light Connector

Both my camper and my flatbed plug directly into the factory sockets. No adapters nessasary unless your connecting something other than a standard 4flat or 7pin. Now if it's not long enough thats a different story and you would need a extender. Oh and if I remembe right my old pop-up camper had a squarish 6pin plug I think, something like that would need an adapter and would have to be supplied by you

Right now all I have to tow is a utility trailer and the wiring harness is not long enough to reach without a patch, but I see what you mean. If you bought a new boat or something you could probably just plug the wire from the boat trailer directly into the Jeep. Nice! Thanks guys!

Re: Tow Hitch Light Connector

I think the round outlet is for trailers that has brakes on them and the flat 4 point is just for your lighting systems. I bought the adapter to turn my round outlet into a 4 point outlet at autozone for about 10 bucks. The adapter is bright red and have a light on it to tell you if your hooked in to your cars lighting or not.

I'm sorry if thats not what your asking.
