Trans over Temp

Hello,

I have a 2006 Grand Cherokee 4x4 and the "Trans over Temp" light keeps coming on. At first nothing would happen while driving and it would flash at random. I had it checked out a few time but the shop never can get it to throw the code for diagnosis so they have updated the module and cleared my codes. This has been going on for a few months; now my vehicle has reached 105k miles and its happening almost every time i turn my vehicle on. I really need advise as to what this could be. When the light comes on now it feels like my transmission is shifting hard. The shop who has looked at it a few times now is trying to charge me $100+ just to diagnose it when I brought it to them the first time it had a warranty on it and now it is out of warranty.. I am a huge fan of Jeep and this is my 3rd one.. I really dont want to have to get rid of it!

Re: Trans over Temp

Welcome to the garage.
Which engine/transmission does your jeep have? Most probably the 4.7L or 5.7L engine? Both come with the 5-45RFE transmission.
I have red several stories about the transmission overtemp message. Most of the time it is a nuissance message caused by the TCM (transmission control module). Ofcourse you need to confirm if there is no real overheat, but many times the message pops up even on a cold transmission from what i heard of. The problem is that the TCM will change its shift schedule when it sees an overheat, which most probably is what you experience now as hard shifting.
Maybe someone who had this problem before can confirm, but as far as i know a new TCM should solve the problem (on the 4.7L and 5.7L, the TCM is part of the PCM, powertrain control module).
But what also needs to be checked is if no wiring is shaving against some metal part, causing a short.
Last possibility is the temperature sensor, but it is quite rare for them to fail.
