Re: Transmission and Steering??

Does anyone have any suggestions on my steering problem? The power steering goes in an out while taking a turn, and there is some rubbing noise.

Re: Transmission and Steering??

Could the belt be slipping? That's where I would start.

Other than that, I would try taking the belt off and turning the pulley for the power steering with my hand to see what shape the bearing was in.

Re: Transmission and Steering??

Your 5.7L should have the hydraulic cooling fan, right? In that case, i would remove the connector from the coolant temperature sensor and start the engine. A fault code will be set, which lateron must be reset, but not important for now. Check if the hydraulic cooling fan goes to high speed. (looks like a 747 in take off). With a bad steering pump, the fan will also not run at high speed. You can then also check if the noise comes from the pump or not.

Re: Transmission and Steering??

I don't have it right now as the transmission is being rebuilt. The shop owner said he saw a piece of metal in the power steering fluid reservoir?
Also, at the exact same time or a little after the transmission took a crap is when the steering started having its problems?

Re: Transmission and Steering??

Unless there was some very, very, unlikely mixing between the transmission fluid radiator and the ps steering fluid radiator, I can't think of any place there would be the opportunity for debris from one to get to the other.

As a guess, I would say the two are a mere coincidence.
