transmission issue

Hello everyone. Im having some transmission issues with my 06 grand cherokee 4.7 that i cant figure out and am hoping maybe someone had a similar experience with this issue... after 2200.00 in trans repair costs just a week ago my jeeps trans started doing the exact same thing again. It keeps defaulting to limp home mode where its basically stuck in 3rd gear for whatever reason. It wont move at all and when its in drive it does nothing as if it were in neutral. Yes im taking it back to the trans shop but before i do that i wanted to see if theres some light anyone can shed on the situation before i take it back to the trans shop and get very angry with the so called trans experts that robbed my bank account of an unfair 2200.00 that only got me back where i started with this issue. Please help its my only family vehicle at this time.

Re: transmission issue

Welcome to the garage.
Your jeep has the 5-45RFE transmission. Do you have now the exact same problem as before the repair? Did they do a full rebuild on it?
The "check engine" light is most probably on and a P0700 code set. Now you will need to have it scanned to know which transmission failure is stored in the TCM.
You say that its in limp mode, but it doesn´t move. So how do you know its in limp mode? Also reverse doesn´t work?
There are several cases known where the inlet filter detached from the pump inlet (due to wrong way of mounting it) and the pump was only sucking air. Also a cracked inlet filter happened several times. Now i may presume that they changed the filter, so if the fault is exactly the same as before, these last two options are not so lickely.
If the jeep doesn´t move forward nor rearward, i would first remove the transmission control relay from the PDC (relay and fuse box under the hood). Now for sure its in limp mode and a preset line pressure should be regulated. See if it now will move. The complete electrical control is removed, but you can use reverse (in R) or 3rd gear (in D) or 2nd gear (in 1st or 2nd).
If it still doesn´t move either way, then there is most probably a problem with the line pressure (oil pump).
I did some gues work now, since we first should see which fault code it set to have a more exact idea what is going on.

Re: transmission issue

Yes the problem repeated itself the same as it did the 1st time. The only difference is that it stalled out the 1st time apparently due to a bad torque converter and it didnt stall when the problem repeated itself. I will plug my code reader into it and see what codes it pulls. As far as the repairs that were initially done are, new torque converter/ master clutch overhaul kit/ pump bushing/ trans filter/ gasket kit/ and around 12 or 13 qts of atf (not sure what kind). Anyhow its very frustrating that i dished out around 1200 in parts (dont know if thats fair or not for the parts end of the expenses but the labor costs were about another 1000 and now its right back where it started. I was reading a thread on the jeep garage community a found that it is possible for a bad tps to make the trans act up. Is this true?

Re: transmission issue

Yes, a bad TPS will mess with the shifting, it normally shifts at wrong times, same as for the speed sensors. But if it doesnt drive at all, i would not expect one of these for now.
Let us know which codes show up. Maybe your scanner can not read the TCM codes.

Re: transmission issue

And it was like this before the rebuild?
You will need an other scanner to read the TCM codes. At least i hope you didn´t try to read the faults with the TCM relay removed, because the TCM will be without power and not show anything. But getting the TCM code(s) is the first step.
Did you check the fluid level and smell of the fluid already?
That it completely doesn´t move in any gear, makes me believe that there is a problem with the line pressure. Could be because of the previously mentioned filter, a pump failure or a leak internally. Did they change the TRS/solenoid block?

Re: transmission issue

Maybe the main filter was not installed correctly?

Very common on the (5)45RFE. Tech doesn't properly install the seal in the valve body bore (NOT on the filter neck); transmission sucks air and goes all wonky (and sometimes damages itself)

This was my first idea as well, but since the problem is the same as before and they changed the filter after the rebuild, then this option is not so lickely, eventhough it should not be discarded.
