Considering you heard the noise up front and your large lift and known cv issues with big lifts on these, Im guessing its an axle up front.
That is what I think too. I would not say 2" is a large lift but it may have an effect. Another piece of information is that I recently had an isolator bushing replaced on the front diff under warranty. The CV boot leaked after that and they had to replace that, which I think entails putting in a new axle. I suspect that they did something wrong (a Jeep dealership) and that it let go during my vacation. With only 39K miles, and on a smooth paved road, nothing should be snapping!
I might get the diagnosis today. A no deductible extended warranty is turning out to be my best "modification."

Re: Transmission Issue...Maybe

And the answer is... transfer case. Planetary gears inside have "come apart" and they will put in a new tc. But they are on back order in L.A. and the deaaler will have to find one somewhere else.

So the tc case guesses were right! Now someone please tell me how this happens before 40K miles.

Re: Transmission Issue...Maybe

Certainly not a common part to fail at that mileage...but some people just have bad luck!

Glad to hear you have an extended warranty...I think they typically charge ~2,000 for a new TC, so in your case the warranty worked out well.

Re: Transmission Issue...Maybe

In case anyone wants an update, a transfer case was located in Atlanta. Has to be shipped to L.A. and then back to the dealer. Looking at Wednesday for pickup.
He says it will just bolt in. Is that true or is there any trick to getting it installed right?

Re: Transmission Issue...Maybe

Yes, it is a simple swap out. Depending on whether the replacement has the shift motor included or not, it may take a few extra minutes if they have to swap that over from the old t-case.

No special procedures or anything to follow (other than marking drive shafts to keep them balanced).

I'm sure you'll be back on the road in no time!

Re: Transmission Issue...Maybe

Thanks to you both. One less thing to worry about. I will mention marking the driveshaft. I would HATE to have a problem driving home from there.

Re: Transmission Issue...Maybe

I'm sure they'll get it right, it's a pretty standard procedure.

14 days later, my Jeep is back home with a new TC. All I know is the "planetary gearset came apart."
$2700 but covered 100% by my extended warranty.
