Transmission problem - please help

I have an 05' Grand Cherokee Limited with the 4.7l motor. I have never had transmission problems and nothing that seemed out of the ordinary. I took it to the garage to have a Ball Joint put in it. When they went to back it out of the garage....there is no reverse.

Here is what it is doing. When it is RUNNING Reverse seems like neutral...there is no torque that would make it want to move..However, you cannot move it around freely (tried pushing it out of the garage). Put it in Neutral and it will Drive Forward. Put it in Drive and it will drive forward. Shut it off and put it in Neutral and you can push it around freely like you would normally in neutral. Start it in neutral and it will start, but jumps forward and wants to move like its in drive. Starts normally in park.

Here is the catch. THERE ARE ABSOLUTELY NO CODES being thrown. NOTHING shows on the computer. The computer does show the correct gear that the jeep is in but does say the transmission is in another gear. For example, it says the jeep is in neutral when it is in neutral like its showing on the dash, but it shows that the transmission is reading its in Drive. When its in Drive on the dash, its showing its in first on the transmission.

Anyone have this problem or have any ideas. Could the neutral position sensor be the problem? I don't want to buy a different transmission and find out that's not even the issue. They are baffled where it took it, because there are not even any codes to give them an idea of where to start :/

Re: Transmission problem - please help

I would start by resetting the computer by pulling the negative cable off of the battery than leave it for a little bit than re hook it up and see if it's still doing it, this can rule out electronic issues

Re: Transmission problem - please help

Welcome to the garage.
With engine on and in Neutral it will not move, showing that for some reason already shift solenoids are activated and clutches being pressurized. If you remove the transmission control relay, the TCM will revert to limp mode and you can manually shift to Reverse, and some forward gears. Does that work with the shifter in the normal detents? The problem could be with the electronic shifter module, maybe it needs cleaning.
Can it be that they messed with the shift cable, which changed the rigging?
