Re: Troubleshooting bad Half Shaft/Steering Rack/Front Bearings

well, whatever is going bad really broke loose today, it happened all of a sudden and the noise is MUCH worse. I pulled it over immediately and parked it. We are probably going to throw it on a rollback tomorrow morning. Here it is at about 5 mph...any faster and it sounds like parts are going to go flying out of it!

I really think the front diff is going to need a rebuild. Nothing visual is hitting and the ring of the noise sounds like something is banging the diff cover from inside...

Re: Troubleshooting bad Half Shaft/Steering Rack/Front Bearings

Shitty luck. That almost sounds like a bad cv axle or like the DS is making contact with something.. Perhaps a broken tooth on the ring gear? Hopefully its just a cv axle.

Re: Troubleshooting bad Half Shaft/Steering Rack/Front Bearings

I had a similar issue in my old WJ and chased it forever to find that it was the front DS. Specifically it was the CV joint back at the transfer case.

Try crawling under there and in one hand grab the DS itself and in the other grab the outside of that CV joint by the t-case. Twist the DS and see if you can hear/see/feel any slack in that joint. Being that it's pretty loud now, there will be quite a bit of slack!
At its worst mine had a very metallic sound, hopefully that's what it is as its an easy fix. Take the DS out yourself as its very simple, just a matter of cracking those bolts loose and pulling it out. Go to a GOOD DS shop and they can replace that CV end for you!

Goodluck!

Re: Troubleshooting bad Half Shaft/Steering Rack/Front Bearings

Success!!!

Diagnosis: Bad Front Driveshaft CV Joint. The U-Joint wasn't in such hot shape either so I came up with 3 options for repair:

1. New Driveshaft $245.00
2. Grade A (less than 15k miles/year less than 200k miles total) Driveshaft, $125.00
3. CV Joint Rebuild Kit $99.00.

Labor is about the same no matter what. Since I also needed my front Bilsteins and spacers installed and haven't gotten around to it, I had him go ahead and do everything. I know I could have tackled it all but sometimes time is money. Here is what I did:

Option 1. I got a new Mopar DS so both ends would be fresh and I wouldn't have to worry about this again for a while. Labor was $90 bucks. That's right, the guy charged me $90 bucks to diagnose, run around getting parts, swap the DS and do a 20 mile test drive to ensure everything is solid on the Jeep.

The Jeep now rides like a cadillac built of gold and rainbows. SWEEET!!!!

Thanks guys for all the help!

Awesome, glad it was an easy fix and that I was right on it being the DS!

I think 90 bucks is fair for what he did. The guy that ended up fixing it is a very honest top notch guy. Sometimes time is money. I'd rather have that hour with my son than under my jeep right now.

Re: Troubleshooting bad Half Shaft/Steering Rack/Front Bearings

That's a hell of a deal. I'd pay a good tech $90 to do that much labor on my Jeep, and I don't let anybody touch my vehicles. Lol.
