U0404 Invalid Data Received from Gear Shift Control Module

I'm getting the Code: U0404 "Invalid Data Received from Gear Shift Control Module" on my 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I read the link here on how to remove it HOW TO: Change out PRND Bezel/Gear Shift but I had a question.

If a new gear shift module has to be replaced, does it have to be reprogrammed/re-flashed after it is installed?

I took my jeep to a dealer and had the code read and they quoted me this enormous price for the part/labor and said that I could not buy the part off the internet because it had to be reprogrammed after it was installed. They said I would have to have the jeep hauled in if I installed the Gear shift module myself and have it programed.

My question is, does anyone know if this is true. I can save a ton of money by buying the part and installing the module myself.

Thanks for helping

Re: U0404 Invalid Data Received from Gear Shift Control Module

I too have the same problem from time to time. I have a '06 3.7 w/ 120K mikes.
I am waiting to replace it until I have some serious driveability problems. When the CEL lights up, and it is the U0404 code, I just keep driving it and it will go away in a day or so, or I can clear the code and it is gone for a few months. I agree, it is a pricey part- (that is why I am waiting to replace it). But it is a DIY project as you can see from the thread, and form what I have heard and read, it does NOT need to be programmed by the dealer. Sounds like they are trying to get $$$ from you!

Re: U0404 Invalid Data Received from Gear Shift Control Module

By following the video's and pictures posted on this site. I was able to take my 2005 Jeep G.C. shifter apart, clean the contacts, put everything back together. No reprograming. No check engine light. Automatic transmission shifts smoother now and no weird things going on the instrument panel. Worked fine so far and saved a bundle of money ($800 or so). Took me a little over a hour.
