I think it origins from the ability for a Jeep to cross the water, leaving the Ford stuck in the middle of the river. You know, you "water Ford" someone who is following you.

I don't know, but every vehicle I have ever owned has an "exit only" exhaust system. Gases and water may come out, but certainly nothing gets "sucked in" to it.

Contrary to what you may want to hear. Old Henry Ford produced a heck of a lot of jeeps during WWII.

And if it were up to him personally, he would have produced them for the other side! Just sayin'!!!

Re: Water Fording

If you study a little about him, he was a very interesting man. He brought a lot of things to America and it's industry that survive today. First company to have a minimum wage and standard wage, built schools for his workers that were mostly imigrant to teach them the langauge and mathematics, and health care for employees. He also more or less invented the modern day production line. Unlike manufacturing today, he also tried to have all facets of production under his control and roof. This included steel from raw materials and his own rail lines for the plants, no waiting on outside contractors to supply him.

I'm not a Ford fan, but as I said he "is" a very interesting figure of American and industrial history.

Re: Water Fording

When going 20" deep, how about shock-cooling the exhaust and soaking the electronics? Is it designed for that or is that shit not ok?

That's lower than the 19-20" mark, but regardless, the Jeep is more than capable of handling much more water than that. I believe that number is just made up to protect themselves from spending thousands on repairs after some idiot wants to cross a 40" deep river.

Maybe this WK2's intake and exhaust are integrated into one pipe?

The electronics have water resistant connectors.

Re: Water Fording

I've been really curious about this too...
I have the 2011 Limited w/Hemi no QL
Is the 20inch clearance you are talking about without QL? -
sorry if I should know better - I'm new to Jeeps.

and I was always under the impression that water could get sucked up the exhaust if it got submerged, isn't that why some vehicles have the exhaust come up the side?

I agree, and have read a lot about him. Don't forget the large real estate holdings in varioius states for lumber to produce the wooden frames and exteriors. Guy definitely had a sense of control over his business...just ask the Dodge Brothers!
