Re: Whining noise from engine

You know what? eff it, heres a vid.

At the end youll see the brand new power steering pump in action. FYI, Mopar is running out of new pumps and are now issuing refurbs. I got one of the last ones! Its why they hit me up for a core charge.

Re: Whining noise from engine

Yikes dood - sounds like a bearing or pulley going out. If that's the sound your new pump is making - double yikes

Re: Whining noise from engine

Its not. It sounds like its originating from the bellcrank but the water pump pulley is right above it. I cant get my head down there to tell because apparently, Ive been told its really bad when you let your face touch a running motor. *shrug*

Re: Whining noise from engine

So I think Im going to have to do this by myself this weekend as Im kind worried about driving 400 miles and potentially getting stranded somwhere between Norfolk and Charleston. My friend who really knows this stuff was going to help me but hes 400 miles away and he warned me of taking a long trip in that condition.

Ive done the Power Sterring so this shouldnt be much different. Ive got a list of questions I need help with though.

1. Coolant draining? Where do I do that and how many bottles of new coolant will i need?

2. Flushing system... what is the method of that and is it mandatory?

3. Gaskets. I bought a refurb pump and it came with an o-ruing and the gasket that sandwiches to the block. Do I need to lube these gaskets like an oil filter or anything? If so... what with?

4. How long should this take? THANK GOD the Navy has hobby garages for me to work in since there are hydraulic lifts and all the tools in the world I need and a coule of old guys that know cars but I also wanted to hear ya'lls opinion.

Remm'eh needs all the help he can get!

Re: Whining noise from engine

I would flush the system since your replacing your waterpump. I haven't heard any sound like that, but maybe it could be the Waterpump.

Re: Whining noise from engine

Potentially good news! I took the jeep to the naval hobby garage and the guy there listened to it and said he didn't think it was the water pump. He got a stethoscope and we listened to find that the noise is coming from the new ps pump I put in the other week. He told me to get the Lucas ps fluid because he believes there is a lot of air inthe system because I didn't flush it out. Went to autozone and the guy there got me to turn the wheels while he looked at the resivoir and sure enough he said there was a lot of air bubbles comin up. Now I gotta drain it and replace it with that Lucas oil and it should be dandy! I'll keep the new water pump around though lol

I just did my P/S pump and yes they are a bit of a pain to bleed the air out. As for using lucas oil I would severely caution you. The jeep system doesnt use regular ATF like most P/S systems use. Stick to the mopar hydraulic fluid and use a mityvac with a P/S adapter on it to bleed the system.

Quoted from WK jeeps
"Mopar® Hydraulic fluid/Power steering fluid p/n 5142893AA (CAUTION: DO NOT use ATF+4 transmission fluid or other types of power steering fluids when servicing or topping-off the 2005-2010 Grand Cherokee power steering / hydraulic system. Damage to the power steering / hydraulic system can occur if the wrong hydraulic / power steering fluid is used."

Re: Whining noise from engine

Hmm interesting. I'll replace it next week with OEM. I isn't think ps fluid mattered unless it's a Honda.

Re: Whining noise from engine

If anyone is referring to an intermittent "chirping" noise every 10-15 seconds +/-....I experienced that with my 2014 GC last summer '13.....They replaced the alternator, nope. Didn't fix it. Then the belts and tensioner. Nope, didn't fix it. Then they did the water pump. That fixed it.
