Why did the traction control kick on at 20 mph?

Good afternoon everyone!
Weird issue that just happened about an hour ago. I have a 2008 3.7 awd GC. 65300 miles, 90% highway miles. Still need to do the 60k fluid changes (i know, i know! See last paragraph)

I pulled out of my office complex and as soon as I hit 20mph, the traction control kicked on and wouldn't let me go any faster. No CEL or warnings, no weird sounds. Pulled over and put it in park and waited for a few seconds. Drove off again, and same thing happened. Pulled over again, shut it off for a few seconds. Started up and drove off and everything was fine. Drove all the way home (about 40 miles, 35 highway) with no issues.

The only thing I can think of that might have triggered this is this:

When I left work I drove to the other side of the parking lot to wait for my wife. Parked on a slight hill facing downward. Pulled the ebrake and put it in park, didn't shut it off. I do this every day. When leaving, I forgot to put it in drive (was a long day, don't judge!) after taking the ebrake off so the car moved forward a few inches until the parking gear caught. Oops.

Other then that, I've had no issues. Is this a sensor thing or something else?

I'm also due for an inspection this month, and I'll probably need new tires and brakes. I'll change the brakes myself as I've never paid for a BJ (brake job, pervs) on any vehicle I've owned. Can someone point me in the direction to a writeup on changing the tranny and diff fluids on the... i'm thinking Quadratrac 1? I've only changed the tranny and diff fluids on my Chrysler 300m, and that was easy.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Why did the traction control kick on at 20 mph?

Could be a wheel speed sensor or some other part of the ABS system - at around 20mph it goes through a self-test.

I would try pulling the codes (either via the 'key dance' or a code reader), to see if there is fault stored explaining what's going on.

If you search the 'How-To' section, you'll find excellent write-ups for all your maintenance needs.

Re: Why did the traction control kick on at 20 mph?

Thanks! Just did the key dance and no DTC codes came up.

Is 20mph the limit in limp mode? I know it is in my 300m. But I'd think if something happened to put it in limp mode, the code would be stored?

When the battery is weak all sorts of stuff happens. Start with the simple stuff.

If that's good, it passes a load test, next is the ignition switch, the multi stalk and last is the shifter itself.

Re: Why did the traction control kick on at 20 mph?

I would agree with the good Dr.

An intermittant wheel speed sensor operation will have the abs module thinking that a wheel just locked when the signal drops out and the module sees 0 mph, so it will activate the abs to try to vent and allow the (already spinning) to wheel spin.

This is not a code that the key dance or even a cheap scanner will read, you need a scanner that will read ABS dtc's. Odds are good there will be a code in there for intermittant wheel speed sensor signal and tell you which wheel. IF it does replace the sensor

Also dont worry about the park pawl, thats more or less what it is there for. You would probably be supprised at the number of people that dont even touch the ebrake because they put it in park.... duh.

Re: Why did the traction control kick on at 20 mph?

Thanks everyone! Can a place like AAP or AutoZone read the abs dtc's?

I purchased the Jeep with 30k on it and put on 35k myself. So I know the battery at least has 35k on it. And I can only assume it's the OEM one. What's the normal life span of our battery?
