Question WJ 2001 4.7 Limited. Air in coolant?

(Edit) Oops. I apparently put this in the wrong section. My apologies...

Hi everybody. First time user here as i bought my first Jeep just a couple of month ago.
Everything is fine, exept one thing bothers me. I can hear air trapped inside the HVAC system (that is, in the coolant fluid). First i thought it was water trapped in the sills, checked it and all drains seemed to be open and no water to be found. Went to the Jeep garage, they say that it's probably a head gasket, causing air into the coolant. But, the truck is not loosing coolant, and there's no white smoke coming from the exhaust, and no white sludge in the engine oil. The engine heat stays right in the dead centre on the dash all the time.
This baffels me? I can hear the air in the HVAC right after startup if i rev the engine right away up to 2.000 - 2.500rpm, and occasionally when i drive around.
Done the "clearing air from coolant" routine, no air came out.

What the heck could this be? I also like to point out that the HVAC does not go to full furnace hot when temp is turned all the way up, neither does it go ice cold when turned to "Lo" on both sides. (Just had the AC filled up) It does go hotter and colder though.

Please advice me if you have any idea...

Kind regards.

Re: WJ 2001 4.7 Limited. Air in coolant?

Welcome to the garage.
You are now in the WK section, its better to put it next time in the WJ section.
Regarding your problems, did you check for any air bubbles in the overflow reservoir? It still can be that without load on the engine, that there is no (or very little) air leak. When you open the radiator cap (on cold engine only), is it full with coolant, or is there also some air?
It still can be that there is a large air bubble stuck inside the heater core. I would try to de-aerate on an incline and see if any air comes out.
Regarding the heating/cooling not working properly, i would try an AC calibration, see here how to do this:Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ - Climate controls The calibration is mentioned at the end of the page.

Re: WJ 2001 4.7 Limited. Air in coolant?

Hi Frango100, and thanks for your reply.

The coolant level in the overflow tank is at the "Full" level, and the radiator is full, and has been since i bought the car.
About air bubbles, i haven't noticed any, but I also have not checked it very well. Should i check that with the engine hot or cold, and it running?

Kind regards

Ran out to the truck after posting last message, just to make sure, as i have not driven the car today and the engine is cold.

Yes, the coolant in the overflow tank is at the "Full" level. Opened the radiator cap, the coolant level there is at the radiator top level, but not all the way to the cap (hope you undestand me). So there is air in the filler neck under the cap, down to the radiator top level....

Re: WJ 2001 4.7 Limited. Air in coolant?

Ok, understood you. So or the air in the heater core went to the radiator, or there really is a headgasket leak. I would fill the radiator up and see over the next couple of days if the radiator stays full. If the system has no leaks, it should expell the air by itself while heating up and driving the air to the expansion reservoir, but if there is a leak, it can draw air into the coolant while cooling down.
Also look at the expansion reservoir when the engine is hot (just after you refilled the radiator, so that you are sure that there is no air in there), and rev the engine. You could also ask someone to put the transmission in R while holding firmly the brake to put some load on the engine, but you will have to do this with real care and use someone you can fully thrust and keep clear of the jeep for in case it will move. (So dont ask your wife or girlfriend to do this after a fight, because it could be a perfect alibi to her).

No, you will be guilty. Because you should know in advance that putting her in front of the jeep will not solve a thing, since she has no clue at what to look for. ( now i will get all the girls on JG over me, luckily i live far far away).
