These are common or recurring faults with these vehicles. Our members report problems with their Jeeps.

Please don't hesitate to ask if you do have any questions.

Hey fellas, please read and adhere to this to keep the thread more easily controlled.

When you post in this thread, please ensure the issue is related to the correct heading as listed below.

1) Add your information by copying/pasting the ENTIRE section your comment refers to for ease of thread maintenence.

2) Describe the problem in detail and/or relate it to a confirmed technical Service Bulletin (TSB).

BODY EXTERIOR -
- early failure of hood struts and hatch struts not uncommon.
- Hood out of alignment.

INTERIOR -
- rear folding seat strikers rattle when seats are in up position, there is a TSB for the dealer to replace strikers.
- Cloth seats stain very easy. TSB on this for the dealer to wash for you once.
- Steering wheel can make slight "grinding" sound on occasion. Dealer disbelieves.
- Passenger seat rattles at highway speed with no passenger in seat. unsure if there is a TSB, i could not find one, everything seems tight.
- Can confirm that the dealer will replace a worn leather steering wheel within warranty period.

ENGINES -
3.0 CRD - Swirl motor may make a chattering noise. This is the vacuum pump failing. Will result in very bad performance.
- Fuel injectors need to be reprogramed if they are replaced or the engine will not run.
- Turbo inlet hose can loosen causing noise and oily residue - fix it to ensure clamp is tightened regularly.
- reports of oil temp sensors leaking (just a leaky washer).
- several reports of sump gaskets leaking.
- Not so much a warranty issue but MANY diesels have been drowned with catastrophic engine consequences. The air intake is vulnerable on all WK's. You've been warned!

3.7L - On some vehicles at cruising speed there is a whine that comes from the throttle body. There is a TSB for this issue what is happening is that as air passes over the joint/seal in between the throttle body and the intake manifold, if there are any voids at all in that joint it creates noise. Essentially the TSB shows you where to judiciously apply RTV in that area to fill in any voids. This is an assembly fault at the factory.

4.7L - Exhaust manifold chatter due to loose manifold bolts. Most people remove, check for warpage, and replace the bolts.
- 2005-07 4.7L Stalling under multiple circumstances, After hard driving, after regular driving, whole at running temp, while cold. From moving to a complete stop, idle will drop well below 500 rpms and occasionally stall out. TSB, requires reflash of computer or possible need to slightly over fill tranny fluid, ATF+4, Possible crankshaft position sensor, (not confirmed on 4.7 yet)

5.7L - Must use correct grade oils to maintain proper MDS fuction and avoid "HEMI tap".
- electronic throttle has massive delay intermittently... dealer has reflashed but problem returns. MAP sensor and elec throttle control parts on order.
- Repeated stalling due to a faulty Crankshaft Position Sensor (had that replaced).
- Third starter on an 06 limited Hemi. QBNKID said the OEM starters suck. When I actually have to pay for a replacement, I will go after market.
- 05-07 models have delay issues with electronic throttle. Dealer rplaced MAP sensor on inlet manifold and installed updated throttle pedal (requires wiring modifications as it's a new design). Can report it is much better now. Will reconfirm in 1 month. - Confirmed, STILL GOOD!
- Power steering pump failures relatively common.
6.1L -

TRANSMISSION - QuadraTrac (QT) or QuadraDrive (QD)
- Service 4WD System light can illuminate and chime regularly. TSB to re flash and tighten connectors.
- The trans wiring harness seals can leak trans oil on a fairly regular basis.. there is an updated adaptor that apparently fixes this problem.
- well documented HEMI "shudder"- unfixable. (I believe torque convertor lockup fault).
- Have heard of cases where the transmission has overheated in extreme sand condition causing the car to go into "limp" for 15 minutes.
- Several reports of slow gear engagement after extended lack of use period. There is a flash "21-016-0509/01/05RFE TRANSMISSION - DELAYED ENGAGEMENT AFTER AN EXTENDED OFF PERIOD" for the tcm and various levels of success reported.

DIFFERENTIALS -
- rear diff whine at 65mph. Replaced ring gear and pinion all fixed under warranty. (after 2 years!)
- Front diff needed new bearings at 100,000km, and now front drive shaft has gone at 150,000.......all mostly open road work 30% on graval roads.

TRANSFER CASE -

SUSPENSION -
- Front sway bar bushes on their way out, likey deny warranty claim due to larger wheels fitted.
- front differential mounting bush fail at 56,000klm. warranty fix.
- creaking rear suspension. There is a TSB to replace upper rubber spring bases on some year models.
- rear upper and lower control arms + track bar (stabilizer bar) completely gave out at 55,000 miles ... started making real loud rattling in rear cargo as if the whole car was moving side to side ... had them replaced and now no noise. This was on a 2006 3.7, manufacture date 02/06.
- Sway bar links on a non-srt wk fail earlier than expacted.
- Reports of standard shock absorbers failing as early as 33,000 miles, but many people would argue that the entire shock absorber valving setup on a standard WK is a failure from the beginning.

ELECTRICS and ELECTRONICS -
- Dealer fit rear seat DVD failure causing flat batteries. (twice)
- FOUR batteries to date (partly due to DVD issue above). Note that CRD battery does not accurately fit petrol engine bays.
- ABS cycles when slowing uphill. I heard TSB to fix, dealer denies this!!!!!!
- Dealer fitted Satnav touch screen failure (pertains WH export only)
- Sun/moon Roof will not close or open, TSB reflash of the computer.
- Third starter on an 06 limited Hemi. QBNKID said the OEM starters suck. When I actually have to pay for a replacement, I will go after market.
- Multifunction headlight switch/stalk - Several people having problems with them not having the proper connection. Causes lights interior/exterior to go NUTS sometimes! flickers, dims. And when the stalk is given a nice bump, they go back to normal.

WHEELS and BRAKES -
- front rotors required machining at approx 40000 miles.

ACCESSORIES -
- Tow bar WILL loosen over time. Ensure bolts are re-checked at regular intervals.
- Ensure dealer installs tow pack correctly. There has been instances where the steel crush sleeves for inside the chassic rail have been left out resulting in catostraphic chassis failure.

MISC -

5.7- Repeated stalling due to a faulty Crankshaft Position Sensor (had that replaced).

And also in my case, everything goes bad.
I'd replace that and the camshaft as well and I'm still having stalling issues and I've already taken it to the dealer for all eligible recalls I'm at my wit's end with this I'm a single mom I can't keep doing this but the same time Im not giving it up

Bump!

Come on fellas, lets populate this thread huh? I know there's more issues than listed here.

2005-07 4.7L Stalling under multiple circumstances, After hard driving, after regular driving, whole at running temp, while cold. From moving to a complete stop, idle will drop well below 500 rpms and occasionally stall out. TSB, requires reflash of computer or possible need to slightly over fill tranny fluid, ATF+4(confirmed fix for stalling and crappy idle) , Possible crankshaft position sensor, (not confirmed on 4.7 yet)

Passenger seat rattles at highway speed with no passenger in seat. unsure if there is a TSB, i could not find one, everything seems tight.

Sun/moon Roof will not close or open, TSB reflash of the computer.

Edited for confirmation of fix for rough idle and stalling.

Re: Wk/Wh 2005~ Grand Cherokee Common Faults And Issues

HEMI 5.7
Check engine light keeps coming on for O2 sensor- Fix unknown. Just keep taking it back to the dealer and replace all O2 sensors, cats, exhaust manifolds, and PCM. But still not working

Random stalling- Drive it till you are dead in the middle of 95 and let someone rearrend you.

I hate my 2007 limited Hemi. Big delay when Jeep is rolling and you hit pedal. Is updated throttle pedal a Jeep dealer item? my dealers play dumb. Also too much 4 clylinder drop out. Do the after market reprogramming updates fix that. Don't need a race car, but bought the hemi for fun driving.

Re: Wk/Wh 2005~ Grand Cherokee Common Faults And Issues

does anyone else hear a whoosing noise when they turn their steering wheel?

i was told it was the clock spring and just had it replaced yest at the dealer and i still hear this annoying noise!!!
Mine whooshes and clicks. I had it in to the stealership and they fixed it once already. Guess I gotta do it again:(.

Re: Wk/Wh 2005~ Grand Cherokee Common Faults And Issues

The noise i was hearing is a noise coming from the inside at the column and only when its cold out. So its a different issue then. Because i changed the steering box and all the steering on my old jeep and it still made the noise.

Re: Wk/Wh 2005~ Grand Cherokee Common Faults And Issues

Hello, I'm working on a 2005 Grand Cherokee 4wd with the Hemi engine. After the car has been sitting for awhile, long enough for the engine to cool completely, a grinding noise is heard when cornering. Has anyone else had this problem? I'm hoping the transfer case doesn't need to be rebuilt.
Thanks for any input.

Do you have any lights on the dash or a message in the display saying "service 4WD"?

Front diff needed to be reraced at 100,000km, and now front drive shaft has gone at 150,000.......all mostly open road work 30% on graval roads, any thoughts re replacement drive shaft ???
Thanks mate, updated!
If the dealer is crazy expensive maybe ask one of the guys here to source one in the US for you? Failing that, JustforJeeps.com.
Or search the wreckers here (in Oz) for GC or Commander bits.

Re: Wk/Wh 2005~ Grand Cherokee Common Faults And Issues

Got the "service 4 wheel drive system" message the other night, had it serviced today. The dealer supposedly fixed the problem. They stated the following on the paperwork:

Scan for codes found U0415 implausible data received from ABS & C1032 right rear wheel speed sensor signal erratic. Follow test in service manuel and it said to repair ABS code first. Check ABS sensor in right rear and it has an internal failure. Replaced sensor and cleared codes.

My fingers are crossed that that was the only cause of it.
