Re: 08 srt8 rear bumper questons
The stock hitch is mounted with 4 large (maybe 1/2 in.) bolts, and the hitch is made of what appears to be 1/4 in. stamped steel plate, probably cold roll. It's tucked up fairly close to the crossmember that it mounts to. Very well put together, IMO. To come close to giving it the same weight capacity you'd have to beef it up quite a bit when lowering it ~2-2.5 in. I looked at mine yesterday and will be making some templates to see if it may be worth the effort. You'd have to butt weld ~2.5 in. X the length of the mount X 1/4 in. plates (probably already drilled) to the top of the existing hitch. Then you'd have to weld other larger 1/4 in. plates (drilled too) on each side and on top of the butt welded extensions to reinforce that area. I think you'd come close to matching the existing capacity, but like Escape said, it's all about leverage, and a hitch expert should definitely be consulted. I'd like to know how they accurately determine capacity, if they actually can do it.
