Re: Ambient lighting

awesome! I'm headed to radio shack now, so let us know how you're progressing. I need to pick up some LED's and resistors, and I'm out of wiring. Great thread so far guys, let's keep it coming.

Re: Ambient lighting

if you lightly sand those leds with fine paper you will get a much more spread out light pattern instead of the usualy beam leds produce....... unless you need the beam

Re: Ambient lighting

I had thought about that a little while back, kind of like a diffuser of the lights. I think I may have to go this route - after testing this afternoon with a 9V battery, the light was a little too focused for what I was looking for. Thanks for the tip!

Re: Ambient lighting

unless maybe I'm doing something wrong muddy. I've got the same type of LEDS you did, and resistors. a few different voltage LEDS, but they all just seem too dark. keep in mind I only tried the 12v ones on a 9v battery, but still, pretty weak.

also, maybe you could shoot me that file on resistors. I should probably get up on that and try some of the other bulbs. which ones did you have the most luck with?

To be honest, I was getting around the same light output based on my resistance I used with all of the lights but was getting different light patterns from them. The other thing to keep in mind is that in the BMW's and such it doesn't light up the dash that much, more so lights up a sheet of paper or your hand. When I was testing them I would attach them to the 9V battery and go into the dark bathroom and hold it a couple of feet from my hand. Same with testing in the garage - turned off all the lights and tested them from above.

The lights I ended up going with for my overhead console location were the 3.0V 20mA 40mcd because it had the highest candle power (mcd). I took a bunch of pictures tonight of my installation of my overhead lights, got them drilled and put in, but haven't hooked them to power yet. I'll be doing a full write up at some point, but won't have final pictures until I can figure out a power source.
