Re: Customizing Dash of my 06 WK

Thanks!

For an idea of the final product, I am taking the two tone colors of the dash (charcoal and light gray) and taking all of the charcoal parts and painting them flat black. Also I found the perfect paint that matched the rims and adding accents in the same metallic silver color. I also am sanding out the pattern in the plastic and making it smooth. Even the markings around the vents are being sanded off.

Re: Customizing Dash of my 06 WK

The biggest part of the project is probably going down this weekend. After getting all of the other parts sprayed and finished I took a look at the large upper dash and found all of the fasteners I have to remove to get it off. The only part I found to be a pain is the passenger side airbad has to come off with it. It will probably only take about 45 min - 1 hour to take off the upper dash.

From my estimates with all of the other pieces I have been working on, this will be about a full 3 day project from start to finish. Gonna have to take off work on Friday and take the wife's car to work on Monday.

Re: Customizing Dash of my 06 WK

Does anyone want a picture "how to" on how to take the upper part of the dash off, if so, then I will take some pics while I am reassembling and post them. If there is enough interest I will do even do a write up on it.

Also while pulling the interior apart, the lights behind me heater controller were all burned out and had to replace the crappy surface mount light bulbs with LEDs. I will post a picture when I get home tonight and here are the parts I used to replace them. I got the parts from RadioShack.

http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...ductId=3060980 - 2 packs since you need 3 LEDs for the board

http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...ductId=2062345 - 1 pack

The total came to $5.24 w/tax here in WI.

I used the 3.3K ohm 1/4Watt resistor instead of the 470 ohm 1/2W that I calculated (engineering by trade) because I wanted the look to be as close to stock as possible and with the larger resistor, it will be less stress on the LED which will make it last much longer (to the point where I will not have to change them again). I will post a picture of the board when I get home and if people want to know which ends to mount the LED on the board I can give you that information because it is necessary to mount the LED in the correct orinetation on the board other wise they will not light up.

Re: Customizing Dash of my 06 WK

Thanks... the 3 days include fully taking the dash apart, sanding off all of the faux leather pattern to a smooth finish, priming, sanding, priming, sanding, and then painting. Since I am doing a flat black paint job there will be no clear. Letting dry for 24 hours, then sanding down the areas getting the silver, and then masking everything and spraying the silver letting dry for another 24 hours, and then finally putting everything back together.

It's funny, my interior is so ripped apart the wife won't even ride in it

Re: Customizing Dash of my 06 WK

So I tried out the new heater controller board with the LEDs and the 3.3K ohm resistors, and even though the light output is roughly the same as the crappy incandescent bulbs, it doesn't look very good. So tomorrow, I am going to go with the 470 ohm resistors I calculated that I needed and retest tomorrow.

CRAPPY ! Like they always say, if there wasn't rework there would be no work at all.

Re: Customizing Dash of my 06 WK

Just tested out the LEDs with the new 470 ohm resistors and I looks as good as it's gonna get due to LEDs not having the same light displacement as a normal bulb. With only a 30 angle, it works.

Upper Dash Update: Removed all non critical screws. All that is left on Friday is to disconnect the gauges, radio, and airbag (the air bag has to come off with the upper dash unit) and a few other bolts that are up under the window vents. Took Friday off to be able to get this project done over the weekend.

Re: Customizing Dash of my 06 WK

8:34 pm - Just finished spraying the flat black coat. Have to wait 24 hours to see how the flat black dried and if there are any streaks in the finish. If everything goes okay and I don't need another coat of black, will be spraying the silver tomorrow night. Will post pics later tonight when I get around to taking some pics. Have to eat some dinner first.
