Is two tone stock on Limted's in the US too? As mine is along with a two tone steering wheel on my 08.

Re: Customizing Dash of my 06 WK

I'm not sure about the limited's but my dash was all dark charcoal gray with the faux leather pattern. I sanded the leather pattern to a smooth finish, the vent open and closed symbols, and filled in the SMS airbag words on the passenger side of the dash. I decided to go with the flat black and metallic silver because that is the theme I am going for with my WK. I have a black WK with the stock metallic silver wheels and I was able to find a metallic silver paint that is an exact match to the silver paint used on the rims.

My plan is to continue the flat black theme onto the door panels. Will post a photoshop photo soon of that project.

DAVY27... I will be glad to help you when you want to tackle this project. It took about $45 of supplies to finish the project (paint only since I had a large amount of sandpaper already). Just PM me with what ever questions you have.

Looks fantastic!
I've ready many write-ups on smoothing plastic, but since yours turned out so well, I'd love to hear the steps you took in more detail.
Nice job!

It really consists of A LOT of time and work. It's as simple as working down from a corse grit like a 60 or an 80 and then working the plastic to a finer and finer grit until you reach about a 240.

I generally use a good rule of thumb (since this is not my first custom dash project) that all sanding is done by hand. I know that this is a pretty crappy and long way to get the project done, but this is the only way to ensure that the plastic won't melt and you have better control.

After getting a fairly good finish with the 240, I thourghly cleaned the plastic, sprayed the adhesion promoter, and then started with filler primer. A couple coats of filler primer, and then wet sand with 400 grit. After cleaning again, apply filler primer and wet sand and continue this process until you get a nice smooth finish on the primer. I stopped at 400 because I was painting flat black, but if you wanted it even better for a gloss paint you would have to go to a higher grit something like an 800 grit. After that you can just follow basic paint pratices.

Re: Customizing Dash of my 06 WK

Awesome work and awesoem write up. I have been making a custom radio (nav bezel) for a 6 disc radio for a few months now only working on it a little at a time. this will greatly hemp me finish up my project and possible match the gauge cluster bezel as well.

Re: Customizing Dash of my 06 WK

Is there anyone interested in the details of what I used to complete this project (paint, sand paper, etc.)?

Re: Customizing Dash of my 06 WK

Just wanted to keep everyone updated on how the custom paint is holding up in the very cold winter weather. No problems what so ever with the plastic growing and shrinking and no paint chipping or cracking. Still looks like new. Get a lot of compliments when it goes to the carwash.
