Re: Customizing Dash of my 06 WK

someone messaged me asking how to get the upper dash section off, so here are the instructions:

TELLYFON,

You are gonna have a bit of work ahead of you to get that piece out. The first time I took it out it took me about 1.5 hours, maybe closer to 2 figuring out where all the fasteners are.

Here are a list of screws things you need to remove first in order to get at all the fasteners:

1. there are covers on the sides (by where the doors close) that need to be removed. In order to get them out you can get pull them out as they are just snapped in place. after you pull them out you will see 2 or 3 screws on either side holding the top section of the dash down.
2. the glove box and section underneath the steering wheel need to be removed. as with the covers above, these piece just pull out as well.
3. the pillars need to come off.
4. the speaker covers and the speakers need to be removed along with all the screws in the area.
5. the vents on the uppper part of the dash need to be pulled out, and there is a nut underneath each one of the vents that needs to be removed.
6. the instrument bezel need to be removed (pull right out) and the instrument cluster need to be removed. underneath the the cluster there are 2 screws that need to be removed.
7. the bezel around the shifter area need to be removed.
8. the radio bezel needs to be removed along with the radio.
9. the heater a/c control area needs to be removed. to remove it all the way, the holder area at the bottom has a screw tucked all the way in back of the opening that needs to be removed in order to get the control out. I believe there are two screws behind the controller holding down the upper dash section to the lower dash section
10. you are going to have to disconnect the airbag wires from the passenger side airbag along with unscrewing it from its mounts. this is necessary since the airbag comes along for the ride when you take off the dash.
11. behind the dash section on the passenger side, you will have to look through the opening where the glove box was and you will see 5 screws (i think it's 5) that hold the upper section to the lower section. i am telling you right now that these screws are a PAIN to get out
12. behind the dash section on the driver side, you will have to look through the opening where the cover was you pulled out on the lower dash and you will see 2 screws, one on each side of the gauge area, that need to be removed. like above, these are a PAIN to get out.

that sound be everything you need to get them out. when you are pulling out the upper dash section, be careful not to do it in one swift movement because the dash speaker wires are attached to the dash on the underside in 3 or 4 places. having an extra set of hands here is useful. when you get it out, let me know, of if you have any problems.

Re: Customizing Dash of my 06 WK

Amarkmtu,

Thanks for the help. You did a thorough explanation.
This is what I needed to know.
At this stage I have to first get the courage to do it.

Thanks

Re: Customizing Dash of my 06 WK

it's really not that bad. it is a little intimidating but once you get into it and actually get it out you will see that it really wasn't that bad. put what ever work you do will more than likely be worth the work to get it out.

what ever work you do you should post pics here. what is the project you are working on??

Re: Customizing Dash of my 06 WK

Not as of yet, it's still winter here in WI and I do all my work in the garage so I have to wait until the weather warms up to complete the two tone project in the WK. I will definately keep everyone updated on the progress.
