Exterior V-led, info required please...

Hello All,

I have now moved onto my next mod, exterior v-leds. Reading through a variety of posts, there seems to be a mismatch in information on parts (oer perhaps I have misinterpreted some). Here is what I am trying to achieve:

Current: Jeep Grand Cherokee 2009 (export model) 5.7 Overland with HID, front and rear fogs.

planned: I plan to have v-led brake, tail and rear indicators, side markers, front indicators and daylight running 'lamps'. Later I will upgrade the fogs to HID/v-led depending on the outcome of this first stage.

Questions:

1) on the v-led website, there are two options for brake/stop and indicators (CK Configuration). Some threads state that the rear indicators only require CK Configuration, can someone validate this and also recommend if the brake/stop lights also need to be CK Configuration?

2) Resistors, there seems to be information where 3 Ohms or 6 Ohms is used, do all LED lights require resistors or is this application specific (assuming this is only needed for the turn signals)? would be interested to know which resistors where used based on the above planned application. the below link indicates a 3 Ohm resistor for the switchback front indicators, would this be required for non switchback front indicators, as well as rear?

How To: Install VLEDs Dual Color Turn Signals

Any help is much appreciated, might be worth creating a sticky on the complete guide to led upgrade (if not already out there).

Since you are export things are different.

09 us has a 3 pin and a separate 2 pin plug for reverse.

I would assume the export tail for 09 is a 8 pin connector???

Resistor is only needed on blink wire. Run 6 ohm between ground wire and blink wire. One each side. They get hot so place them carefully.

My guess is you do not need CK for the export.....but not sure. 2 minutes with a multi meter and you can figure it out. Go to autolumination.com for a good picture.

Re: Exterior V-led, info required please...

Thanks robpp, will have to go pick up a new multimeter as I can't seem to locate mine, checked for the link, will check which pins are grounded and live.

I presume resistors will be needed on the front and the rear, as I saw some threads where resistors are put on the front indicators (same as what you mentioned, spliced across the ground and live, thus making the resistor in parallel to the actual bulb). Just a bit confused as some threads say 3 Ohms and some say 6 Ohms, wouldn't this be governed by the wattage in the leds?

Will check tomorrow if its a 3+2 pin or an 8pin, I would assume it would follow European models (8 pin) as the brake light is separate to the indicators (3 bulbs in total - brake, backup, indicator), and hence separate signal lines for brake and for indicators.

Re: Exterior V-led, info required please...

front has 2 bulbs blinking so needs 3 ohm MOST OF THE TIME. i have heard of peeps needing 1.5 to get them to work but not my experience. i say 2 bulbs because it counts that little side marker bulb under the amber. Now on export headlights you also may have DRLs....so i cant be 100% sure of anything. all my headlight experience is US.

rear is single bulb blinking so 6 ohm.

I had some 06 WK tails that I had all LEDs on each side and it required ONE 3157 and one 3157 CK. IIRC CK was in the middle position. which is where your AMBER bulb lives. thats why i suggest the multi meter to confirm. I also had mine jumped so both bulbs blinked or brake.

I had some export tails once but dont recall anything about the bulbs as I didnt try LEDs.

if you need 6ohm resistors, i bought them by accident instead of the 3 ohm.

let me know. I have no use for them

Considering I'm shipping everything from NY, it's cheaper to include them in the same shipment, thanks anyways

Turns out all indicators are non-CK, but the break/tail light is CK. the socket is 8 pin going into the tail light housing (with five lines connected).

Lights ordered from V-led, lets see how long they take considering its a back order

here is a guide for the wiring......

you put the resistor between the BLink and the GRound wires.

Re: Exterior V-led, info required please...

V-leds came in today, international shipment takes forever when 1 item is not in stock!! (and they forgot to send 4 bulbs but thats another story). Anyways, have done everything else except the indicators as I wanted to spend a bit of time considering I have to mount plates and install the resistors .. maybe over the weekend ..

Changed the Daylight running lamps, fogs, tail/brake lights. Couldn't change the reverse light as the export model is not a 921 (which is what I ordered), instead it is a the 3157 like the older 2005-2007 models .. the joy of owning an export model

here are some comparisons :

Left is V-LED 19 bulb 921 lights, right is OEM:

Right is the V-LED H10 Fog light, and left is OEM:

I will have to order the rear 3157 reverse lights separately, but will be busy enough with the indicators until then.
