Re: Homemade Overhead Ambient Lighting 2006 WK Grand Cherokee Limited

I'm going for it. I was hoping I could pull power from the homelink connector since the buttons light up when the parking/head lights are on but can-bus makes it more difficult than that. However, there is one lead that is ignition-switched, which would make the install cleaner/easier, but do I want the LEDs on whenever the Jeep is on? It's not like you'd see it during the day... decisions decisions

I'm also going to add an LED in each door handle recess (on the top, firing down), and maybe one at the rear of the center console above the outlet on the angled part

I'm using red because it doesn't affect your night vision like the other colors

Here's the output at 2 feet:

Gross! I don't want any hotspots so I frosted the tip with some 320 grit sandpaper

MUCH better

To be continued...

Re: Homemade Overhead Ambient Lighting 2006 WK Grand Cherokee Limited

Nice. Let's get more to join in in this mod.

I thought about frosting mine too but the light output on mine is so dim with the 4.7k ohm resistor, there was no need too.

I can't wait until my interior is finished so I can show you all pictures and videos.

Also, if you look through the posts, you will see that Muddy tapped his into the dimmer wire that plugs into the instrument cluster and his work with the dimmer switch and only come on when the parking lights are on.

I saw no need to hook it up to the dimmer so I soldered mine onto Pin #3 of the parking light relay under the hood. Mine also turn on only with the parking lights. Simple.

Yeah I'll probably end up doing something like that. I first just wanted to see if I could keep it all localized in the overhead console; the fewer wires that need to be run, the better.

Re: Homemade Overhead Ambient Lighting 2006 WK Grand Cherokee Limited

Localized in the overhead console.....I don't think that's going to happen.

I'm sure there is another wire behind the cluster you can use.

Also, making sure you have the LEDs shining on what you want them to evenly is a bit of a challenge. Just to let you know.

It's possible if you don't mind the LEDs turning on whenever the ignition is on lol

On the Homelink connector, pin 4 (black wire) is ground, and pin 5 (pink/yellow wire) is the "fused run relay output" (powers on when the ignition is on)

Oh ok. I had mine on ACC at first but then switch to Parking. It's much better IMO. You're not going to see the glow during the daylight hours.

Re: Homemade Overhead Ambient Lighting 2006 WK Grand Cherokee Limited

maybe you all can help me, I'm a bit stuck here with the process of the math for resistance. I get the formula's for how much resistance I need, that's not the issue. I can't figure out how to actually do the math OF the resistors themselves.

I just keep getting frustrated, and all my research just leads me in circles. somebody teach me how to resist.

Re: Homemade Overhead Ambient Lighting 2006 WK Grand Cherokee Limited

Yes, the chart shows you how much resistance is needed. But you can add more resistance to dim the LED to your liking.

Me I used one 4.7k ohm 1/4 watt resistor and the light output is exactly where I want it.

There is nothing special to learn because the resistance NEEDED has already been calculated. Just make sure your resistance is equal to or greater than the resistance needed.

right, problem being, I'm not understanding the resistors. I'm seeing a x100, so is two of those 200 or 10000? see what I mean? I just don't understand their labeling.

Re: Homemade Overhead Ambient Lighting 2006 WK Grand Cherokee Limited

Oh. You're talking about the technical stuff on the back.

Resistors have 4 color bands. There is a standard color chart to go by when reading them.

Let's take a resistor with Yellow, Violet, Red, Gold.

Yellow = 4
Violet = 7
Red = x100 (multiply the 4.7 by 100)

That's all equals 470.

So it's going to be a 470 ohm resistor.

Last band is gold.

Gold = 5%

470 ohm resistor with a 5% tolerance.
