Yeah. Waiting in confirmation.

Muddy, how did you run the wire under the hood. Where?

Re: Homemade Overhead Ambient Lighting – 2006 WK Grand Cherokee Limited

Pin 1 of the parking light relay under the hood will give you your 12V+ turn on for the ambient lighting.

The lights will turn on and off with your parking lights. This is the pin that gets 12v when you turn the switch. Obviously verify with a meter or a test light as i dont have a car to test on at the moment.

Judging by your last comment, you haven't verified Pin 1 yet?

Re: Homemade Overhead Ambient Lighting – 2006 WK Grand Cherokee Limited

I didn't get a chance to go pull the relay, but does it have the standard relay numbering on it (30, 86, 87, etc...). If it does, that Pin 1 should probably be the 87 lead, that is the normally open output. If those match up, then I'd say that's probably our ticket to finishing this up.

One other question that came up today, I like the idea of connecting this in some way to the dimmer switch. Is there a way to tap into that somewhere along the way so it can be dimmed down with the interior lights? If not, I'd love to find some way to install a hidden dial adjustment (similar to a tuning dial on a clock radio) to adjust the intensity. Any idea where to find one of those?

As for the question on getting the wire through the fire wall, I ran it through the same location as my 4ga power wire above the dead pedal on the driver's side. There is a single cable running through there, and even through I didn't follow it all the way to the end, it might be where the hood release goes through. With the dash undercover panel removed (black plastic, two screws), the grommet is pretty easy to see. If you want, I can try to snap a picture and send it your way but you should be able to see what I'm talking about. Took some force and some needle nose pliers, but work out great.

Re: Homemade Overhead Ambient Lighting – 2006 WK Grand Cherokee Limited

I'm sure you can find some sort of "resistor box" off of some hobby website or something. Not sure what to call it but I'm sure there is something out there.

As for running the wire, did you have to remove anything?

Re: Homemade Overhead Ambient Lighting – 2006 WK Grand Cherokee Limited

No, didn't remove anything, just had to cut through the rubber to run the wire through (with the 4 gauge). It's pretty stiff rubber so be careful when cutting.

May have found a way to hook to a dimmer. Looks like the orange and brown wire going to all the panel lamps is what changes voltages as the dimmer is turned up and down.

Keep me updated on that. I don't want to adjust the LED but I would like to see you get it to work.

I just want to tap the LED to the parking light source.

I think it'd be nice to have a dial to turn them down in intensity instead of pulling them out and messing with resistors, but having them dim with the rest of the interior will make it look very stock.

I was also going to ask you, do you see the inside of the drilled hole reflecting a lot of your LED light back at you when it's turned on? I'm trying to decide if I should color the inside of the hole to reduce any reflection, or taper the hole somehow so essentially all light is shot downwards and not showing up as a green dot on the console.

Thoughts?

I know i've tested it before on a 2006, and i know it worked when i was done. You should always test a power source before tapping into it.

I thought about painting the inside of the hole black too but looking at it now, you will have to sink the LED farther in order to achieve what you are talking about.

2005 should be just like the 2006. I'll work on it this weekend. Thank you very much.

Working on this in my garage now.

Pin 1 is clearly label with #1 when you pull the relay and look underneath.

I'm taking plent of pictures to show people how to tap a wire into the fuse box and run it into the cabin so that you can have a 12v+ power supply only when you turn on the lights.

I'll be right back.
