Plastic chrome snap-on wheel covers safe to remove?

Hey guys, I'm pretty sure I want to remove the plastic/chrome wheel covers on my WK Laredo because they just don't fit the look I'm going for with it (He goes off-road a good bit and I'm tinkering here and there to make him more off-road-ready). Is there a downside to this? I don't think they serve much function besides (ugly) aesthetics, but I'm not 100% sure. I'd hate for them to be protecting something important and my removing them cause damage to my wheels/brakes/etc. Has anyone done this? They snap right on and off, no glue or anything.
