Poor man's WK mod thread

This was a great thread on my old car forum. The basic premise is for this to be a one stop thread for cheap mods. $20 and under mods only. Basically im a cheap bastard and I know others are too.

(if this is a repeat thread, then forgive me i searched first)

I can start her off:

Made my own shorty antenna. Use two pliers to pry off the ball on the top of the stock antenna. Cut to desired length, and reattach ball with epoxy. I also painted mine black. Best part about this one is it was free (I had the epoxy and paint sitting in my garage, but even if you don't they are still cheap)

Next:
I also bought a shorty antenna online, it was only $15. The reason I made mine though is the reception is spotty where I live (its mountainy here, I need a longer one [thats what she said]) Heres a pic of the one i bought.

Lastly:
Plastidipped my wheels. Self explanatory and you can see a pic in my signature. Cost ~$20 for all four wheels.

I've had the Sonnax Line Pressure Booster on mine for about a year and a half now, and it has worked great. It is suppose to raise the line pressure and increase clamping pressure on the clutch packs. It does firm the shifts up a little at higher throttle settings, but is not noticeable at light throttle. Years ago, when I used to work for Bob Spar and Mort Schuman at B and M Automotive, we used to jack the pressure up on the Hydro-Sticks for the same reason. It'll help prolong the life of the clutches by reducing slippage, especially if you've modded the engine for more power, and the transmission is currently in good condition. Well worth it, IMO. To each his/her own though.

Ive had the sonnax for the last 3 years probably....on a pretty stock engine and a heavily modded, stroked, high hp engine

Do you think its made any difference scott

I was thinking the same thing. Good thing somebody made this thread. ;)

And a side note to any 5.7 guys with a predator, and thinking about getting the line booster: save a little extra and get Ryan's trans tune. It's beast. Not a cheap mod, but thought it applied here.

Where does the booster line install? Reminds me of the powerwire...

This family of transmissions uses a full range line pressure sensor mounted on the
outside of the transmission for "closed loop" line pressure control. Due to this
system, traditional methods of raising line pressure by changing the PR spring or
valves have no effect. The Sonnax Line Pressure Booster alters the pressure signal
sent to the computer causing the computer to raise line pressure. Part number
44957-LB1 (68RFE) has 10-15 psi increase, and 44957-LB2 (45/545RFE) has 15-30 psi
increase. Higher line pressure increases clutch holding power and torque
capacity but with these transmissions, the increase has a limited effect on shift
feel. Changes in shift feel will be noticed mostly under aggressive driving or
loaded conditions. This part is ideal for heavy duty and modified vehicles and
even stock transmissions when a little extra pressure is desired. No other
modifications are required. The Line Pressure Booster installs between the
pressure sensor and vehicle harness using OEM style sealed connector.

found this on another thread.

After the first of the year when I get a Wide Band Sensor installed, I'll get Ryan's trans. tune. Then I'll have all three.....Sonnax Booster, Diablosport and Ryan's trans. tune. I have to stop spending on the WK and save for Christmas, or I'll be in real trouble.

^ haha, I know what you mean. I'm pretty sure Ryan did not recommend the booster with his tune. Definately doesn't mean it can't be done. Please let me know how it works out.

I've heard great things about the Sonnax adaptor as well. Boosting line pressure (within reason) in an auto tranny is a good thing. Manufacturers set them up to shift soft so soccer moms don't complain about hard shifting. Firm shifts from an auto help extend the life and keep the heat down.

I've had one on for 10 months or so,I liked it alot. I just got a TCM tune from FlyinRyan (which raises the pressure), and he advised AGAINST running them both. But for the $40-50 it cost, it was well worth it in the meantime.

There is a plug on the pass side of the trans, close to the 2nd cats, you unplug that and plug the booster inline. maybe 20 min from up ramps to off ramps, depending on how easily your clip locks come free.

#48 ·
Nope! It's a little tough to get to on the passenger side, but it involves unplugging the plug from the tranny and inserting the Booster between (in series) the plug and the transmission. The booster has the appropriate mating plugs, so you can't go wrong.

See, look how many people have been keeping this a secret. Crestwood, you may want to consider putting your 10 ft. pole away on this one. It really does work.

#51 ·
Yes, if Ryan's trans. tune boosts the pressure, you probably wouldn't need the Sonnax unit. I think boosting the pressure with both (~60-70 PSI) would begin pushing your luck. Maybe if you had forced induction you could give it a try, as you'd probably lunch the 545RFE in time anyway. I don't think they're designed to handle as much horsepower as the NAG1's. They're suppose to be good for up to ~600 hp.

If the diesel has the 545RFE transmission, why not? See my post No. 21 on Page 2.

I am going to do the trans tune from Ryan...it needs something haha!

Here is a cheap mod...I bought a 90 degree elbow for breather tube or whatever it's called, capped the inlet on my intake and put a metal 2" long tube in the vertical end of the elbow...secured it with some zip ties and and secured the filter with a screw-clamp. Any small filter will work, as long as you match the inlets/outlets up. All in all $18 for the parts and gets rid of the black hose to your intake. Only downside is it will need to be replaced when smog'd, in Cali at least.

#56 ·
^Why?

X2, Crestwood, on the breather filter????
