Projector retro-fit

I'm going to order a new set of lights and put some projectors in. For those of you who have done this: Any suggestions? What projectors did you use and are you happy with them?

I'm looking at the Morimoto Mini H1. Any one use these?
Also, does any one make a projector that is a direct fit. I've heard that there are some (depends on bulb type?) that will mount directly with no cutting.

Any suggestions or direction would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

Re: Projector retro-fit

I'm doing this myself, I lucked out and RTS gave me the cyber monday deal up till last friday so this kit (listed below) cost just $200ish. The kit thats a direct fit with the 05-07s (after you bake open the lights) is the H1.

This thread gives the same concept idea of how to do it. He had some of the parts I think but you'll need the bulbs, ballasts, shrouds, projectors and from what Andrew at RTS told me, they throw in a CANBUS compatible relay which knocks out any possible light-out error and also stops the flicker. The Morimoto ballasts that are included are very good quality. Also, you'll want some butyl resealing tape ($10).

FYI you'll want the 9006 for your lows (these are Bi-xenon) by the way. That means that there's a pigtail clamp you simply clip into your highbeams so that when you hit your high beams you retain the halogen lamp for "flashing" but if you're turning the high beams on the HIDs will activate a solenoid which then changes the HID pattern to a high beam (so you'll have four lights on) and then back to the two HIDs when the highs are turned off.

Alternatively you can go with what the DIY thread did and just get the low beams and make your own kit. Personally I liked the idea of the bi-xenon (some people go a step further and set up quad bi-xenon for 4 low and 4 high beams at all times.)

As noted in various threads you must specify the GATLING shrouds for proper fit and make sure theyre the shrouds with FOUR screw holes in the back.

Good luck!

Or you can get the elite kit and buy the H1 projectors separate:

Re: Projector retro-fit

Yeah, I thought about the quad set-up but can't justify the cost. (how often do you use your hi-beams). I was thinking about using the bi-xenon for the lows as you stated and controlling the shield with the feed from the hi-beam but, also installing a HID kit in the hi beam position and controlling it with a seperate switch. So the projectors would function as both the hi and low beam while the hi-beam slot would now essentially be a HID flood on a seperate switch.

How is the light output with a 55watt HID in the stock hi-beam position??

Re: Projector retro-fit

not sure but honestly, I dont think you'd even need the 55w in the high beam position. You also wouldn't need to use a separate switch, just turn off the smartbeams if you have them.

you could just get these morimoto 3five bulbs for the high beams
http://www.theretrofitsource.com/pro...oducts_id=4123

get the ballasts (or cheaper if you want to risk it)
http://www.theretrofitsource.com/pro...roducts_id=160

and then get a relay. then you've got low beam bi-xenon and high beam flood HID in the reflector housing, same idea I want to implement once I want to spend another $200 or so. Remember to stick with one brand if you want the Kelvin temps on the bulbs to match. If you get morimoto HID for the lows and say DDM tuning for the high beams, chances are the cheap DDMs wont match

Re: Projector retro-fit

I don't have smart beam. I want to use the extra switch (it's already there and wired with a relay for a secondary set of aux. lights) so the projector, and only the projector, functions as both my low and hi. The HID in the hi position would then be switched independently from the rest. Hopefully giving me a kick ass HID flood without having to clutter my grill with more lights.

I have KC daylighters on my Bull Bar now but I keep them covered. I was debating converting those to HID as well.

Re: Projector retro-fit

I retrofitted Morimoto Minis into a set of rep headlights, it was a total PITA to open my lights, But I have been told that A1Auto headlights are very easy to open, you will need a dremmel tool to grind down the edge on the bulb hole of the low beam reflector. Other than that it was pretty easy, seal them up good.

IMO quads are too much, I like the look of single projectors.

Here's a couple pictures of the headlight I made.

Re: Projector retro-fit

Yeah. I thought it would be plug n play but not fully. Aside grinding down the ring on the inside of the reflector and breaking off the humps on the outside of the hole on the back of the relfector, it's all very easy.

The A1 Auto headlights opened with no problems.

You will like the Mini H1's. Do your own thing with the shrouds though. Try a different style. I'd like to see that.

I also have a complete guide for this that will give you all the info you need.

What model PIAA lights do you have in the fog. I need to upgrade mine. Do you have the ability to adjust them like stock? Or are they fixed in their position?

510 series Crystal Ion Yellow Beam. You can get 510 in white also.

I can rotate them by hand but I would have to loosen them. It's not big deal to me because I never have to.

I've been thinking about taking the covers off and finally using them. Lol. I have to get the multifunction switch first.

And they aren't literally fixed in one location.

I just wanted to do something other than HID. Just something different.
