Skid Plate question

So now that new colors can be ordered with the saddle interior I am thinking about changing my order tomorrow at the dealership. Along with the color change I am thinking about nor ordering the off-road package and just adding skid plates and tow hooks to my Overland. I was wondering what everyone here thought about that. I dont do hard core offroading, I just go hunting and go in some deep ruts and mud every once in a while. I have high centered a few times and want the skid plate protection.

I am doing this because I really really like the factory 20's and really don't like the 18's. I know I could replace these, but I don't want to have wheels and tires lying around that I don't use.

My question is are the skid plates that you get as an accessory the same as when you get them from the factory? Are all the same areas covered? It seems that there are only three skid plates on the Mopar accessory page and on the parts page it seems there is more than that? I just want to make sure I get enough protection.

Help from someone that really knows about this stuff would be great!

I would see if the dealer what swap the wheels and tires out for you since they will be virgin tires.

I did not order the off road package, but I've already talked to my dealer re: skid plates and tow hooks. The skid plates are indeed available, they're the same ones, and they're also far more expensive to add than the off road package (on an Overland at least). Tow hooks don't show as available yet.

If you want them but want to keep the 20" rims, you'll be paying for the privilege. If I had the ability to change my order, I'd have added the off road package- at the time it didn't look to be available with the V-6, but that seems to have changed.

They wouldn't do it. And my experience selling take offs is really bad. Since there are actually wheels I like that can be standard I figured I would get those. The only real difference in the off road package are 18's and skid plates and tow hooks. If I can add the same skid plates I figured that might be the better option.

The skid plates are only $500 or so aren't they? My issue with the 18's is I know beyond a doubt I will have to replace those. So adding skid plates may be better...

Parts were somewhere just north of $500. Installation by the dealer is rated at a couple hours. While the front skid plates can probably be mounted by yourself, the one over the fuel tank is kinda heavy and looked to be pretty difficult to DIY as a one man operation without a lift- I'm just having them done by the dealer before delivery- going to run a shade over $700 or so... about 3x what the off road package would have cost.

Tow hooks look like they're going to run somewhere in the $150 range from what I've seen- no word on installation, but I expect they can be done DIY easily, but until I look for myself I have no idea. I expect that removing the lower front fascia will give all the access one needs, but I don't know that for sure.

You may be able to add the skid plate pkg into your order as a condition of sale like I did
tell them you've changed your mind unless they supply the plates and hardware...might work? It did in 07 anyway

I'm going through the same debate and may just go the route below and be able to avoid a long wait to order:

If you end up with the Overland Hemi, Tow Group, and Quadra Drive II - that will get you the meat of the Offroad II except the skids, hooks, and 18' wheels.

With the above, you will get the 230mm rear axle, rear ELSD, select drive, and off road axle ratio.

The "off road ratio" doesn't happen. Each engine choice keeps the same axle ratio whether you have the package or not according to the engineer's chat.

The engineers stated that the 3.09 axle won't exist for the Hemi with the off-road package. They keep the standard axle ratio. This was one of the questions I wanted to know for the chat, and they answered that. There's also some information floating that the stock is 3.45 vs 3.47, but that's negligible. It could also be one of those specs that just keeps going along with a typo!
