Sypder LED Tails installed (few questions)

Just got my Spyder "smoked" LED tails in yesterday. So far I like them, but I anticipated them to be a little more tinted, to be honest. Did I order the right ones? Also, there's a little gap between the tail lights and the car. Kinda makes me worry about water getting in. Although, it looks like everything is sealed up inside. I just want to make sure I get it fixed now if I have to. Pictures below:

Re: Sypder LED Tails installed (few questions)

i wouldnt be worried about the water getting in its just the fitment of aftermarket lights. as far as the smoked look goes i might suggest getting some black VHT nightshades. and spray them to the darkness you want.

I got these because I tried VHT on my stock's. I think I'll go the professional route if I decide to tint.

Re: Sypder LED Tails installed (few questions)

yeah the proper way to smoke them would be to spray clear with a little bit of black mixed in. if you have access to a gravity feed spray gun and an air compressor. you can get the clear and black paint and do it your self. just try it something you dont care about till you get the mix down right and you should be good. save yourself a bunch of cash.

Re: Sypder LED Tails installed (few questions)

Use VHT really good stuff just follow the guide below and it will come out great! this is from a month ago when i tinted my friends 2010 Jetta. Came out professional!

Supplies:
2000 Grain Sandpaper
VHT Nightshades
Any can of clear coat
Microfiber non scratch cloth
Mcguires Rubbing Compoung

First take the 2000 grain sandpaper and wetsand the lights, occasionally wetting the sandpaper. You want to make sure the light is nice and smooth and no shinny spots. Keeping the light all dull will ensure the new paint will stick correctly.

Then tape off any areas you with to not be tinted, in this case i taped off the reverse light with blue painters tape. Then you want to make sure the lights are free of dirt.

Apply the vat night shades in a very light coat making sure to cover the whole area. It is absolutely important you do consistent light coats. Wait 5 minutes and apply another coat. On my WK i have 2 coats to be sure i won't be pulled over. But my girl (friend) didn't care about the darkness of the tint and just wanted it to blend in with the actual black base coat of the car so i applied 3 coats. After this step i waited a half hour. Don't worry if there are a few imperfections in the paint once the light has dried completely give it a very light sand.

Then its time for the clear coat. Clear coat give is that signature shine and protects the paint from any of the elements outside. For this car i applied 5 coats of clear coat each 5-10 minutes apart. The lights will end up looking like this if you do it right.

see how it has some very small bumps? we are going to wait for 12-24 hours for the paint to dry then give it a very light wet sane to remove any imperfections. Then thoroughly dry the light with a microfiber cloth.

The light will look dull, thats ok because now we are going to polish it which will make it look like glass

Take the mcguires rubbing compound and apply a good amount onto a microfiber cloth and start rubbing. You may have to apply some force to the lights to get them very shinny.

After that reinstall and you have perfect tinted tails!

Don't be scared because if you do make a mistake you can always sand it down and start over!

Re: Sypder LED Tails installed (few questions)

Hey man, I had the same issue with one of my LED tails as well. Be really careful that the tabs on the side are pushed in completely. I had to tap mine a bit and then it was flush. Hope this helps

also, don't expect too much, spyder auto is just repackaged foreign stuff made to fit jeeps. it's not a company that produces their own products, they just mass buy a bunch of chinese bulk stuff and put it in their own box.

Re: Sypder LED Tails installed (few questions)

I have 3m window tint on my tails with the clear reverse and I am going on two years now with no issues...I am amazed how well they have held up...I had them done with the 3rd brake light by the place that did my windows...just another idea

And the light output is great...although I did upgrade to vleds premium bulbs...but it was good with the stockers too

Re: Sypder LED Tails installed (few questions)

So what do you guys think? Have the stocks tinted or have the new LED's tinted. I'm leaning towards the LED's since they're brighter and safer/more legal...

Local shops around here charge $150 for tail light tinting, btw. The pricing of living in civilization, I suppose.
