Davy bro honestly it sounds like something you do not want to take lightly. That airbag can be the difference between you walking away from an accident and slamming your head into the windshield, I know that sounds harsh but that's the reality. I would definitely find out what's causing it with a proper scanner and maybe not even drive the car till then. If you have to pay the dealership to do a scan with their tool, even if it means using some money you had set aside for mods. Just my honest opinion for your safety man.

Discharging the system is paramount if you dig in though, it's fairly easy to trigger detonation even if you know what you're doing. It'll likely not bother you again though, like Josh said, any impedance in any number of circuits can flag a mal in the system, won't show up on a standard obd2 scanner as it's completely separate of the engine mgmt. There are scanners that can access the airbag system, abs, wcm, and other subsystems, but they're spendy. Check some local parts stores, they usually have scanners to use, some may have an advanced tool that'll let you look into it.
discharging the system...does that mean disc the battery and letting it sit for an amount of time before working on it?

Yeah this is one of the cases where I do not recommend trying to replace parts without knowing for sure. Every part you replace you risk installing incorrectly and not functioning when you need it. And there is no way to fully test it out until you actually need it to work. Just trying to look out for you bro

Check with the local parts stores man, they might have the advanced scanner that can read it for you and they won't charge you in hopes to sell you the repair/replacement parts. My local Napa has a fairly decent scanner that will access the different diagnostics. I'd check everywhere before letting the stealership rape your wallet...

Interesting california does not allow auto parts stores to lend scanners for diagnosis. Most of the independent shops down here charge an hours labor for a diagnosis with inferior tools which is as much as the dealer does anyways.

Yeah, dcon your neg cable and let it sit a while. Industry standard is 15 minutes, there are capacitors that store charge to initiate the airbags and they need to discharge before it's safe to work with. Give it at least 15 mins before proceeding.

Yeah and after 15 mins I always like to do the key and brake pedal thing I posted to ensure that the system is fully discharged

Serious?! That's crazy man!! Almost all the stores up here (Oregon) have obd2 scanners to lend. Some are better than others but they'll get you the trouble codes. Everywhere from autozone, oreilley, napa, etc... Just another reason I dislike Cali I guess...

thanks bro!
Many thanks! There are just some things you cant avoid the dealer. I kno i wont be comfortable having that on with friends and family in the car, even if 1 thinks they are the best driver in the world

good looks! ill call some of them up to see if they offer free diagnostic on airbag light, once i get the code ill research from there and head to the dealer hoping the best.

i would love to do it on my own, but i think it was either you or josh said even the most experience can trigger the airbag deploy...me being fairly new to this, i dont feel confident enough to do

But was your light on even when the jeep wasn't running? If I understand correctly Davy's light turns off when his jeep isn't running. But I guess it wouldn't hurt to check the fuse
